Cardinals 2 captures early lead to trounce Rockets 2

ROCKETS 2 fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 19-9 loss to Cardinals Baseball Club on Sunday.

Cardinals scored on a stolen base by August Gunter, a single by Johnny Venter, a walk by Willem Kraamwinkel, and a walk by Dale Coetzee in the first inning.

Despite the loss, Rockets 2 did collect seven hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Cardinals had 16 hits on the way to victory.

Cardinals captured the lead in the first inning. A wild pitch by Anthony Van Veenhuysen scored one run for Cardinals. Rockets 2 scored three runs in the sixth inning. Rockets 2 scored on a error and a double by Philo Shozi. Cardinals scored six runs in the fourth inning. The big inning for Cardinals came thanks to a single by Johnny Venter, a single by Craig Longworth, a fielder’s choice by Brian Seach, a single by Dale Coetzee, and a stolen base.

Coetzee earned the win for Cardinals. He tossed six innings, surrendering nine runs, seven hits, and striking out two. Van Veenhuysen took the loss for Rockets 2. He went two-thirds of an inning, surrendering five runs, two hits, and striking out one.

Van Veenhuysen and Shozi each drove in two runs to lead Rockets 2.

Keith Dempsey, Venter, Coetzee, and Longworth collected multiple hits for Cardinals. Venter went 4-for-5 at the plate as he led the team with four runs batted in. Cardinals tore up the base paths, as three players stole at least two bases. Coetzee led the way with four.

Mare of the match went to Lazaro Lopez and man of the match was awarded to Keith Dempsey. Next week Cardinals will take on Super Kings at Hoy Park 8am.
