DESPITE the overpowering heat of last weekend the Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) greens were packed with competitions.

In the final of the women’s open singles Doreen Salmond was leading for the first half of the game, until her opponent Heather Cooper jumped ahead with 11 shots in five ends.

It was a very close race to the finish, but Doreen managed to land the winning shot, taking the title away from two-year reigning champion Robyn Hutton. Congratulations to both Heather and Doreen on an exciting final which was thoroughly enjoyed by a packed veranda.

Congratulations also go to Wessie van der Westhuizen on reaching the last 16 out of 137 entrants in PN men’s novice singles.

In two round one games of women’s handicap singles, Barbara Beamson defeated Heather Cooper and Jane Coetzee was forced to concede her game to Kathy Cox after 13 ends due to health concerns. In round two games Marie van der Walt beat Jacqui Fouché; Amanda Ninow beat Marion Crouch, and Maggie Robertson beat Jeanne Alexander.

The first three rounds of men’s drawn pairs were also played in the sweltering sun. There were 11 games in round one: Greg McLeod and Greg Veldtman beat Ian Shearer and Bobby Henderson; Graham Ellis and Keith West beat Coy Schrauwen and Ben Venter; Jeff van Belkum and Steve Evenwel beat Doug Joubert and Dean Cooper; Adie Fuller and Shawn Sutherland defeated Peter Callaghan and Barry Buckland, Gerald Chalder-Royle and Paul Davies defeated Alec Stirzaker and Neville Roscoe.

Vince Phaal and Mike Roberts beat Clive Frank and Eric Klopper; Linden Cooper and Alf Bingham beat Al McGregor and Phil Perkins; Ray Robinson and Keith Berry beat Rob Troughton and Herman van Zyl; Ken Leech and Paul Els lost to John Hewgill and Owen Turner; Andrew Walker and Steve Woor lost to Glen Scorgie and Terry Morgan; and Gustav Somers and Wessie van der Westhuizen lost to Brad Cox and Mike Pitchers.

In round two Graham Ellis’ team beat Adie Fuller’s; Glen Scorgie’s team beat Gerald Chalder-Royle’s; Linden Cooper beat Greg McLeod; John Marsh beat Lofty van Tonder; Jeff van Belkum defeated Tony Cam; Ian Crouch defeated Ian Mills; Brad Cox lost to Vince Phaal; and John Hewgill lost to Ray Robinson.

Finally in round three quarter finals of the drawn pairs, Ian Crouch and Martin Birch beat John Marsh’s team; Graham Ellis and Keith West beat Jeff van Belkum’s team; Vince Phaal and Mike Roberts beat Glen Scorgie’s team; and Linden Cooper and Alf Bingham beat Ray Robinson’s team.

In the Hypersure mixed trips the leaders of plate A going into the final round are Greg McLeod, Alec and Nicky Stirzaker. They will play number two on the log Alf and Denise Bingham and Boet Els.

Leaders in plate B are Tony Cam, Alan and Linda McGregor, followed by Ian Crouch Adie Fuller and Sue Welch.

Winners of the women’s 2-4-2 were Denise and Lulu Bingham, followed by Julie Sutherland and Elmarie Young. Second session went to Jeannette Els and Sue Welch, who scored an eight during the game.

The 100 board at TGIF was won by Mike Roberts, but Denis Couzens was not present to win the attendance draw, so that will be R150. Bob Southey’s number was drawn in the key draw, but as it was not a winner the pot rises to R5,930 next week.

The first B20 six-week corporate bowls challenge is due to start at 5.30pm on Wednesday, 1 March. It will be a great team-building event with big prizes, music and boerie-rolls on sale, so why not get your firm to enter a team? Only one bowler per team is needed. Details are on the board.

Entry lists now are on the board for the PN mixed pairs (the Oppenheimer) and the club men’s novice singles.

Ian McDonald has the only birthday this week, and ABC’s thoughts are with all members who are not well, especially Robyn Hutton
