New awning, play area for AGC

The official roof-wetting of the new awning will take place on Friday, 2 February, and it would be superb to see all members turn out to celebrate the new addition to the clubhouse.

GREAT news for Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC) members and the visitors to ACC is that an awning is being erected on the patio outside the clubhouse, overlooking the 18th green.

The official roof-wetting of the new awning will take place on Friday, 2 February, and it would be superb to see all members turn out to celebrate the new addition to the clubhouse.

Also noteworthy is that a children’s play area with lighting has been erected on the grass area just past the lapa, which has been cordoned off with a picket fence to demarcate the play area. These are huge improvements which will encourage parents to take their little ones down to the club to enjoy their own facilities while the adults braai or just sit and chill on the veranda.

The senior men’s first league fixture of 2017 was hosted by Amanzimtoti on Monday, and the home side took an early lead in the league by taking the honours on the day by a single point from the Bluff boys. Mount Edgecombe was in third place, 10 shots behind. Ronnie Nair once again had the best individual points on the day with a fine 40 points.

Beachwood Golf Club will host the second senior’s fixture, scheduled for Monday, 13 February.

Wednesday’s IPS competition was host to 43 players, and the scores reflected how well the course is playing, with the top four players all shooting below their handicap. Terry Cousins beat Rob Kruger by a count out on 39, and Brian Stephen beat Nico Vogel fourth place on 38 points.

On Saturday the women played 4BBB, and Charmain Stone and Estelle Binnekade blew the field away with a fine 49 points, followed by Gerda Heydenrych and Sue Boucher on 45. In third place by count out was Delene Berry and Britney Burger, one of KZN’s up and coming junior golfers. Ina de Boer was nearest the pin on the seventh hole, and Charmain put the lid on a good opening with a two club on the fourth.

The men also played a fourball stableford format, with the father and son pairing of Leon and Callum Haggie taking top spot on 49 points. In second was another father and son pair, Peter and Murray Dalton with 48, followed by Louis Steyn and Nico Vogel on 38. Fourth place went to Norbert Dupont and Michael Tait on 46.

The jackpot was not won so carries over to next weekend, while the two nearest the pins on the fourth and 15th were won by Peter Dalton and Mathew Hamer respectively.

On Saturday 28 January, the longest drive competition will take place from about 5.30pm onwards, with the first fairway providing the setting for the big hitters.

A reminder that AGC welcomes all visitors and locals to go on down and use its superb golf course and driving range. Phone the pro shop on 031-902-4144 to book a tee off time.
