THE first round of Hypersure mixed trips got underway at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club (ABC) on Friday, and despite rain interruptions all the games were completed.

Leading the ladder after the first hurdle are Glen Scorgie (sub for Greg McLeod), and Alec and Nicky Stirzaker. Gladys Hughes won the chocolate draw. Thanks to the Hypersure women for complimentary drinks and gifts, and also to bar and kitchen staff, and to all the organisers.

Neville Roscoe won the 100 board at TGIF; Denis Couzens’ (honorary life member) number came up in the attendance draw, but sadly he was not there to claim the prize. Thus next week’s draw will be worth R400. Crecia Allers had the chance to win the key draw, but unfortunately she chose the wrong key so next week’s key will be worth R3,820.

The novice men did well in the first round of PN singles at Durban Bowling Club. Going through to the next round on Saturday, 28 January are Paul Davies, Steve Woor, Keith West, Greg Veldtman and Wessie van der Westhuizen, as well as Dean Cooper and Leon van Rensburg who each had a bye.

Marion Crouch prevailed over Vera Broskie in a first round game of handicap singles, with the game going to 23 ends.

Nineteen men’s first round handicap singles games were played this week, many of them going down to the wire. The most notable of which was between Mike Roberts and Rob Troughton which went to 30 ends, where Mike was the winner by two shots. Ian Crouch beat Gustav Somers, Ian Mills beat Alan McGregor, Wessie van der Westhuizen beat Dean Cooper, Mark Brodie beat Shane Tocher, Alec Stirzaker beat Dallas Davis, Vince Phaal beat Gary Wise, Boet Els beat Doug Joubert, Duncan Wright beat Linden Cooper, Martin Birch versus Bobby Henderson, Clive Frank versus Alf Bingham, Martin Young versus Barry Buckland, Sean Roberts beat Keith Berry, Trevor Zulch beat William Sithole, Coy Schrauwen beat Dave McMillan, Jeff van Belkum beat Glen Scorgie, Lofty van Tonder beat Steve Evenwel, Mike Pitchers beat Ian McDonald, and John Hewgill beat Herman van Zyl. The winners have progressed to the second round.

Runners-up were Pete Callaghan, Clive Frank, Shane Tocher and Denise Bingham. In third place were John March, Vince Marriott, Andrew Pearce and Leigh Callaghan. Tony Cam, Ken Leech, Jock Meldrum and Margaret van Belkum took the first session and the second session went to Glen Scorgie, Terry Morgan, Nicky Stirzaker and Martin Birch.
