Cardinals jettison Rockets’ hopes in 14-11 shootout

Cardinals went up for the duration of the game after the third inning.

THE Cardinals Baseball Club promo team beat Rockets 2 in a shootout, 14-11 on Sunday.

The bats were busy at Hoy Park and when the dust cleared, the Cardinals had claimed a 14-11 win over Rockets in four innings.

The teams banged out 17 hits hits between them, as well as five for extra bases.

Cardinals’ starter Vaughn Nel struggled, allowing six in one and two thirds innings, but the bullpen let up five runs and the offence banged out 11 to pick up the slack and secure the win for the Toti team. Even in defeat, Anthony Van Veenhuysen played well for Rockets 2, racking up four RBIs on two hits. He doubled in the third inning and singled in the fourth inning.

Anthony also looked sharp on the hill. He gave up just one hit, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one during his two-thirds of an inning of work.

The game was back-and-forth heading into the third, with seven lead changes. Cardinals took the lead in the third inning and held on for the victory.

Keith Dempsey scored and gave the Cardinals the lead for good.

Dale Coetzee got the win in relief for Cardinals, pitching two and third innings to allow five runs. Robyn Lee lasted one and a third innings on the bump for Rockets 2 before being removed, allowing five hits and six runs.

Rockets 2 jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Cardinals answered Rockets’ top inning with one run of their own in the first. Cardinals scored on an RBI double by August Gunter.

It didn’t take long for Cardinals to answer as they scored five runs of their own in the second – a steal of home by Willem Kraamwinkel, an RBI double by Aaron Joubert, a passed ball, a passed ball, and a walk by Laezaro Lopez.

Cardinals went up for the duration of the game after the third inning. Additional runs came from four singles.

Rockets 2 scored three runs in the top of the fourth, to cut its deficit to three. An RBI single by Ramon Roelandt and a two-run single by Anthony Van Veenhuysen gave life to Rockets. The Cardinals closed the game out when Coetzee got Quade Ontong to strike out.
