AMANZIMTOTI Bowling Club is proud to announce that its new greenkeeper is a ‘home-grown’ appointment. William Sandile Sithole started work as a groundsman at the club eight years ago in the footsteps of his mother and older brothers Richard and Innocent.

He worked initially under the eagle eye of Ian Crouch, and has worked under at least four greenkeepers since then, including Micky de Wit, and has gathered knowledge from each of them.

The proud father of three completed the PN greenkeepers course in 2013, and is well known among members for his quiet manner and shy smile. He is also a good bowler with a handicap of -1 and plays in club competitions and the league. With his years of practical experience and his training, the members join the general committee in wishing William well in his new position.

The winners of women’s 2-4-2 were Doreen Salmond and Heather Brown on 4+20. Marie van der Walt and Vera Broskie were runners-up; and Sue Welch and Jeannette Els won second session. Marie also won the 100 board.

The weather did not play ball last weekend, and both the women’s and men’s turkey competitions were rained out. They will now play on Saturday, 17 December – the women at 8.30am for 9am, and men at 1pm for 1.30pm in mufti. As a result, competitions which were due to be played on 17 December will be rescheduled, and the new dates will be on the board.

A few more women are required for the men versus women game on Friday, 16 December which has an 8.30am for 9am start. This is a free game with loads of prizes for everyone, so get in the Christmas spirit and enjoy the annual battle of the sexes.

Big Chicks will be in its usual slot on 18 December, so make sure your teams are organised. Christmas hamper contributions are coming in nicely, so don’t forget to take yours along when you next go to the club. The draw will be held at the New Year’s Eve party.

At TGIF Gladys Hughes continued her lucky streak by winning the 100 board again. Eric Gardner was not present to win the attendance draw, so that will rise to R300 next time, which will be on 6 January 2017. Ian Crouch managed to draw his wife’s number out of the bag for the key draw, but unfortunately Marion couldn’t find the right key, so that pot will rise to R3,020.

Birthday greeting this week go to Lys McDonald and Ian Crouch.

Finally, it was with great sadness that the club learned that Micky Roche finally lost his brave fight against cancer. The club’s sincerest condolences are sent to his wife Rosemary, his family and friends.
