To add to the fun there were prizes for all

IT was a very busy finale to 2016 at Toti Bowling Club with three fun competitions taking place in the beautiful weather of the long weekend.

Firstly, the hotly contended ‘Battle of the Sexes’ took place on Friday, 16 December.

This year the 10 teams of women were very pleased to break the men’s four-year winning streak by 25 points to 17 and receive the floating trophy. The 100 board prizes were won by Gaynor Snyman, Vince Marriott, Mike Groom, Gladys Hughes and Sue Welch.

To add to the fun there were prizes for all, sponsored by the club and several members. Many thanks for those who donated to this and the Christmas hamper.

Saturday, 17 December was turkey day. The winners of the women’s game were Tokkie de Kock, Sue Welch and Debbie Gueffroy, each receiving a turkey. Julie Sutherland, Amanda Ninow and Margaret van Belkum were runners-up, winning gammons, while second session winners Pam Chalder-Royle, Marie van der Walt and Lys McDonald won chickens. Pete Shepard won a gammon on the 100 board.

In the men’s turkey Ian Mills, Bobby Henderson and Wessie van der Westhuizen won turkeys, Clive Frank, Paul Els and Leon van Rensburg in second place won gammon; and Ian Crouch, Jeff van Belkum and Brian Cox won chickens for the second session. The 100 board gammon was won by Peter Snyman.

It was monthly ‘Big Chicks’ on Sunday, 18 December and winners were Greg McLeod, Doug Joubert, Mike Pitchers and Lynn Joubert, with runners-up Adie Fuller, Rob Troughton, Peter Snyman and Karen Shepherd. Third were Willem Pelzer, Alec Stirzaker, Jenny Delport and Terry Morgan.

First session was won by Nan Roos, Owen Turner, Paul Davies and Steve Woor. Peter Callaghan, Clive Frank, Shane Toucher and Julie Sutherland took second session. Thirteenth place went to Alf Bingham, Barry Buckland, Chris van der Westhuizen and Maggie Robertson; and ‘most bowls’ to Linden and Heather Cooper, Boet Els and Greg Veldsman. ABC’s thanks go to the sponsors of this game – Food Lovers Market, Brian Pascoe and Gladys Hughes.

Earlier in the week Denise Bingham defeated Talla Stephens-Viviers in a women’s open singles game. Good bowling to Denise in the next round.

There will be a demo of the exciting new B-20 bowls format on Friday, 6 January at 3.30pm for interested members. TGIF will start again on the same evening, and Saturday, 7 January sees the semi-finals of the women’s drawn fours.

Birthdays between now and the next edition of the Sun in January are Yvonne Wright, Hennie van der Walt, Debbie Groom, Doug Joubert, Ian Shearer, K Pollard, Mervyn Conway, Chris van der Westhuizen, Jacqui Fouché and Jenny Delport.

On a sad note, past member Joy Steele died a few days ago, so condolences are sent to her family and friends.

Finally, season’s greetings to all past and present members. May you have a lovely holiday season and come back refreshed for another year of friendly battles and warm friendship.
