Wednesday's individual stableford was played in fairly decent weather, only moderate wind and a bit of scattered rain in parts.

THERE was great news this week, following the results of the KZN inter club matches from Umkomaas Golf Club’s menfolk.

Their matches were played at three different golf courses down south – Port Shepstone, Margate and Southbroom.

George Mzimela, Nelson Moonsamy and Saga Reddy won the ‘Frog’ division on the final day in the matchplay at Port Shepstone Golf Club. This is wonderful news as inter club is a KZNGU sanctioned tournament, for both women and men, a very prestigious tournament to win. All three golfers played extremely well, and even though the course changed daily, they adapted their games accordingly. This just goes to show that with guts and determination, UGC’s men have it in ‘spades’. Congratulations to Saga, Nelson and George on their wonderful achievement, the club is proud of you.

The club also entered the senior frog division, where Devlyn Fraser, Fred Welch and Dave Kemp were playing. Although they didn’t fair as well as the frog side, they enjoyed the experience nonetheless. Dave Kemp was the most consistent player of the three. Well done Dave. Once again, congratulations to the three frogs.

Also this past weekend, UGC’s girls played inter club at neighbouring Selborne Golf Club. According to a reliable source, the bronze girls had a wonderful time and fabulous fun the whole weekend. The silver girls, on the other hand, Sabiha Bacaus and Michelle van der Merwe did very well, golf-wise, by ending their Inter Club quest as runners-up to the winning club, Victoria Golf Club in the silver division. Considering the size of the winning golf clubs and the number of their members they have to choose from, UGC’s girls did extraordinarily well by coming second in their division. Congratulations to both Michelle and Sabiha for accomplishing what they set out to do, . Overall winners of inter club were Port Shepstone Golf Club’s gold division team/s. Well done to them. To the bronze girls, there’s always next year at Dundee.

Wednesday’s individual stableford was played in fairly decent weather, with only moderate wind and a bit of scattered rain in parts. The winner was newly elected club captain, Barrie Taylor on 40 points with Piet Vermaak in second spot, counting out Rob Mathias into third place, both on 39 points. In fourth and fifth places respectively, was Peter Toward and Dudley Pringle, both with 38 points.

Saturday saw the playing of the monthly Widenham trophy individual stableford, club captain Barrie Taylor welcomed visitors Allan Eriksen and Derek Cowden and although the field was small due to quite a few regular players being at inter club, a good day was had by all. Winner of the Widenham trophy this month was Jimmy Spear on 38 points with visitor, Allan Eriksen taking second spot, counting out local boy, Simon van den Bosch into third place, both on 37 points. Jimmy Spear managed to grab hold of the jackpot with his 11 points but the hidden birdie (10th hole) and the attendance draw (Kuben Naidoo) will be carried over to next weekend. Only one two-club was had and that belonged to Bruce Sutcliffe on the 17th hole.

This Saturday, 5 November is the Toyota Malanda monthly medal competition with social golf on Sunday, 6 November. Call the office on 039-973-1042 to book a tee time. Bear in mind that the phone number for the Golf Shop no longer exists. A reminder to all members that club fees were due on 1 September, these fees need to be paid in order for the club to continue to maintain the golf course in its usual stunning way. With the recent rain, the golf course is looking wonderful, hence the need for fee payments. Another reminder to every member who has a booklet for the R10,000 draw in December, to return the stubs of the sold booklets along with the money to the office as soon as possible. The committee doesn’t want a last-minute scramble looking for missing stubs a week before the draw. The new website is up and running and can be found at www.umkomaasgolf.co.za – log on and have a look at it, it really is worth a visit. There is loads of information as well as all the club’s happenings.
