Golfers urged to attend UGC AGM

Another reminder to all members who still owe their annual club fees - these were due at the beginning of September.

IT is that time of the year where Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) AGM is in the forefront of everyone’s mind and the decision as to whether members should attend or not.

It is of utmost importance that all full members attend this annual meeting, especially if there is something weighing on their mind.

The finance meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 19 October after prize-giving, where all items pertaining to the finances of the club will be discussed. The main AGM will take place on Saturday, 22 October also after prize-giving, where the new club captain and committee will be elected to office. Every vote is extremely important since this will be the committee which will guide UGC into the next year.

Wednesday’s competition was completely rained out – not that the green keeper is complaining since the course looks stunning, but it does play havoc with the competitions. Consequently, little or no golf was played on Wednesday, although there were a couple of guys out there ‘chancing their arm’ in the hope it wouldn’t rain at all. UGC’s seasoned ‘professional’ weather forecasters decided it was going to rain – maybe the visitors should have listened to them.

Last Saturday was the not-so-popular individual bonus bogey competition which welcomed Sean Prendergast and resident visitor Mike Harvard to the club. Considering the wind factor and overcast weather on Saturday, the scores were quite good. Peter Toward was the winner with a score of +3, followed by Wally Kent, on a count out in second place. This put Dave Kemp into third place, both on +2. There was another count out for fourth and fifth places between Barrie Taylor and Deneys Williamson, which Barrie won, both players on a +1. Well done to all the players, even if they scored ‘minus-a-lot’ on their score cards. Both the jackpot and attendance draw (Peter Williamson) will be carried over to next week – Michelle van der Merwe took home the hidden birdie on hole 12. Among all the pluses and minuses there were two two-clubs on the 17th hole – one to Dave Mulroy and one to Simon van den Bosch. Well done, guys.

This Saturday, 22 October the competition is the fourball betterball with social golf on Sunday, 23 October. Call the office on 039-973-1042 to book a time on either of these days.

Early good luck wishes go to the women’s and men’s teams who are playing inter club over the weekend of Thursday, 27 to Sunday, 30 October. The women are at Selborne Golf Club for three days and the men will be travelling to Port Shepstone, Margate and Southbroom for their inter club matches. The very best of luck to thnm all, UGC is proud of them all for flying the flag.

A reminder to all who have books of tickets for the R10,000 draw in December to start returning the sold stubs to the club (with the money). The club doesn’t want a last-minute scramble for the tickets and money just before the draw in December.

Another reminder to all members who still owe their annual club fees – these were due at the beginning of September. Make some effort to pay your fees – the club needs them to keep the beautiful golf course in its present pristine condition.

Hopefully the new website will be up and running by the end of the month, maybe sooner. This is something to look forward to with its new look. Until then, call the office for more details on 039-973-1042.
