Slabbert stands tall in rugby

He was selected to the SA Rugby U16 green squad.

At two centimetres short of two metres tall, Toti’s Deon Slabbert (16) is proving he’s head and shoulders above his rugby competitors.

Slabbert was selected for the KZN U16 Grant Khomo rugby team, where the Westville Boys High School grade 10 pupil was in action at an inter-provincial tournament in Paarl in the July holidays.

He helped the KZN squad make it to the finals, where they lost 23-21 to the Bulls.

He impressed the selectors so much that he was selected to the SA Rugby U16 green squad. “I attended a South African Rugby Union U16 player assessment camp in Paarl during the October school holidays where we were put through our paces,” said the lock. “It was good but very hard and physical. The training was much more than what we do at school.”

While Deon will unfortunately not play for the SA U16 squad, the SA U18 coaches were at the training camp to keep an eye on the boys and it is hoped he has caught their eye for selection in the future.

Deon stands at an impressive 1.98 metres, which helps him excel in his other chosen sport – basketball. He was selected for the KZN U13 basketball team.

Born and bred in Toti, he attended Kuswag Skool before moving to Westville Boys High School.
