Batsmen take extended route to win over Comtech

Warren scored an impressive 42 runs not out, and with Faf on eight not out, the team reached 90 runs for one wicket in 11 overs.

ON Sunday, the Amanzimtoti Cricket Club’s first team travelled to Comtech for their match against Umlazi.

The team were led to believe that their esteemed captain had spent the last three years studying economics.

They were obviously all wrong – he must be studying tourism, as he took them on a 35-minute sightseeing tour of Isipingo and Umlazi with flashing lights and several stops, before they finally arrived at Comtech.

A howling Southerly wind, blowing ice cold down a pitch that sloped from South to North, greeted them on arrival. The pitch appeared good but the outfield was very bumpy, and this would make ground fielding only for the brave.

Amanzimtoti fielded first, with JJ opening the bowling from the southern end. He took a wicket with his second ball, and the entire team seemed to relax. This was a bad mistake, as their number three batter set about the bowling attack with gay abandon, especially when hitting downwind. He and his partner took the score to 64 off nine overs before his partner was out for 10 runs. He was finally out two overs later for a well-played 58 runs.

After he went, wickets started to fall at regular intervals and Umlazi finished the 20 overs on 118 runs for eight wickets. Robin played a classy innings and scored 56 quick runs. Tegan made a quick fire 36 before he went out with the score on 111 runs in the 14th over. Toti only needed eight runs with four wickets down, but they wobbled along to 118 for eight before finally getting the winning runs in the 17th over. Definitely not ACC’s firsts’ greatest display with the bat, but a win nonetheless. Next week ACC firsts face Ilembe in the semi-final and a huge improvement will be required if they are to reach the T20 final.

The ACC second team travelled to Durban North to play DHSOB on their home ground. DHS batted first and started losing wickets right from the start. Ngobani and Sheldon got two wickets each and Anele and Faf each got three, bowling DHS out for 86 runs in the 29th over. Warren and Jonathan put on a 74 run partnership before Jono was out for 27 runs in the 10th over.

Warren scored an impressive 42 runs not out, and with Faf on eight not out, the team reached 90 runs for one wicket in 11 overs. This is a very powerful team, where all 11 players contribute towards producing these types of results. Well done to the entire team – long may these results continue.

The ACC fifth team played against Chatsworth United fourths at the Cato Manor grounds on Saturday afternoon. United went in to bat first, and managed a score of 145 for the loss of eight in 30 overs. Wickets were evenly spread among the bowlers; with Marc Sheppard 2/15, Clint Fraser 2/17 and Brian Vickory 2/28 being the most notable. The fifth team batsmen set about the run chase in their usual, fast-paced fashion. Brian Vickory top-scored with 39, closely followed by Marc Sheppard with 36 and Faanie Oodendaal on 30. Toti managed to pass the required runs after 15 overs, finishing on 148 for the loss of six wickets. Well done men.

The third team fixture was cancelled due to a water-logged pitch.
