Lucky 13th for Siyabonga’s 21km race

This Saturday, the South Coast Marathon helpers run takes place from Lords and Legends with a 4.30am start.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club members supported the Cooee challenge on Sunday with some good results.

The weather on Sunday was a huge challenge.

With gusting head winds and cold temperatures, running was not so easy. The 42km consisted of two laps on the fairly flat and boring route along Durban’s beachfront. Well done to all AAC marathon runners who have now qualified for Comrades Marathon 2017.

This Saturday, the South Coast Marathon helpers run takes place from Lords and Legends with a 4.30am start. If you can help with a seconding vehicle, contact club captain Chris on 083-301-3632. The club will supply water and Coke along the route, which has both the 21km or 42km distance option.

Members of the public are reminded that the Sapphire Coast marathon takes place on 16 October, with the start and finish from Lords and Legends. The 21km route will turn at Karridene and the marathon will turn in Umkomaas Dive Centre. Motorists are urged to drive carefully to avoid the runners. Marshals and Metro Police officials will be stationed on the route to assist the traffic flow.

Runners have a chance to enter the marathon on Saturday, 8 October. These manual entries will be taken at the clubhouse at Hutchison Park from 9am to noon. Take along the correct entry money, which is R190 for the 42km and R150 for the the 21km. Temporary licenses cost R30. The club appeals to volunteers to assist with marshaling. The club’s 40th year celebrations take place on 8 October at the clubhouse, starting at 2pm. Members pay R30 which includes meat and salads, while visitors pay R15 which includes salads but not meat. RSVP with Belinda for catering purposes on 083-408-0639. A cash bar will be available.

Upcoming races: 9 October Swift Challenge at the Hulamin ground in Campsdrift, Pietermaritzburg, a 42.2km run, 21.1km run and 10km run/walk starts at 6am; 9 October Rural Chapter 10km run starts at Mgezeni Athletic Club at 7am.

The club walkers’ championship takes place at the following races:

10km: 30 October – KZN Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium starting at 7am.

21km: 6 November – Checkout Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium starting at 6.30am.

Entries for the Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon on 16 October are open. The race will run/walk from Hutchison Park and back, due to damage to Metro Rail’s railway line. Closing date for entries is 8 October. Visit https://www.eventtiming.co.za/gossbalfe

Club members cannot take part in race. A helpers run will take place on 8 October starting at the club at 4.30am. Club vests must be worn and Coke and water will be supplied. This event is for members only and their times can be used as a Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier.

Should you not be able to do your time trial duties, as per the list, make arrangements for someone to stand in for you.

The club also informs members that the AGM will take place on 26 October at Lords and Legends. Nomination forms are available at the clubhouse or these can be emailed on request.

Note that reflective belts are mandatory for time trials.

Weekly time trials are on Wednesdays at 5.30pm for walkers and 6pm for runners (4km and 8km options). Visitors are welcome to join and should meet at the clubhouse at Hutchison Park. On Saturdays there is an 11km run and walk from the clubhouse at 5.30am for walkers and 6am for runners. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served afterwards.
