LAST weekend, four Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) women ventured down to San Lameer GC to play in their final league game of the year.

Sabiha Bacaus, Michelle van der Merwe, Lesa Vergottini and Denise Nell took on the dams, lakes and other hazards at San Lameer (Umkomaas has no water other than the irrigation) so it was rather tricky to navigate for the women, to say the least.

But they took on all that water with aplomb as though they had been doing it for years. Unfortunately there was a 50-50 split – Lesa and Denise won their match while Sabiha and Michelle lost their game. Not too serious since they have until next year to get the team together again. Well done to Lesa and Denise.

Wednesday was the usual individual stableford and at last – Piet ‘Jorsie’ Vermaak, after being placed down the prize list many times, cracked it by only just winning the competition with an amazing 45 points followed very closely by Derek Airey in second place with 44 points. Taking third slot was Rob Finlay with 43. Well done, Piet – a win is a win – and you’ll do it all over again next Wednesday.

On Saturday, 24 September, the club hosted the MegaMaster sponsored day. All thanks to Gregg Andersson for organising the prizes. The better ball competition was well supported by the members with scores so close, it was just a matter of one point difference and a count out to decide the four winners. The winners with 49 points were Sabiha Bacaus and Jacques Hulley scooping the first prize, with Rob Finlay and Johan Hugo in second place with 48 points. There was a count-out for third and fourth places – Rudi von Fintel and Matt Hamer taking it from Simon van den Bosch and Michelle van der Merwe securing fourth place, both teams on 47 points. There were nearest the pins as well – Jimmy Pickavance – fourth; Gregg Andersson – ninth; Mark Bingham – 13th and Eric Morsner – 17th. Well done to all the players and thank you again, Gregg.

It must be stressed that Spring treatment will start on Monday, 3 October and will continue until Thursday, 6 October, inclusive. The golf course will be closed for the duration of Spring treatment (although the clubhouse will be open), re-opening on Friday, 7 October. All will be back to normal on Friday with the course being manicured and looking its absolute best for the months ahead. The office has requested reciprocity from all neighbouring golf clubs – call for details on 039-973-1042.

Back to the week ahead – the ‘Geriatrics’ start their golf earlier at 6.30am to tee-off shortly after that time. Both Graham (083-325-5705) and Keith (083-305-5740) will have all the information on the times and so on, so call and join them on Tuesdays and Fridays.

KidzGolf is active at the moment, and it is good to see so many youngsters mastering the game of golf, which is not an easy sport. Call the office on 039-973-1042 for more details on KidzGolf.

Six-pin is played only on a Friday afternoon from around 2.45pm. Playing six holes takes just over an hour, so go on down and enjoy the company of the regular ‘six-pinners’.

The new website should be up and running in the not-too-distant future – for the previous website, go to www.umkomaasgolf.co.za
