Inaugural ACC junior sixes a smashing success

This was won by ACC's own Toti Hawks team under the leadership of Luke Bowley.

SATURDAY, 17 September saw Amanzimtoti Cricket Club (ACC) host its inaugural Junior Sixes tournament.

The weather did its level best to dampen everyone’s spirits but despite the cool conditions and the occasional rain, the morning sessions went really well.

The club was pleased with the way the event turned out, and the junior players enjoyed their time on the field. They loved the short format, and were all in high spirits despite the grey weather conditions. The rain began to come down heavily around noon, and concern for player safety convinced ACC to dispense with the final play-offs. ACC decided to award the prizes based on the teams that had fared the best in the two age group logs.

The two age group winner trophies are going to find pride of place on display at the Amanzimtoti Sports Centre in Lords and Legends. These are imposing prizes, and the club is extremely grateful to the various sponsors for providing the trophies. Many thanks to local businessmen Stephen Olivier and Ryan Cooper, owners of Merc Auto Services in Westward Park, Amanzimtoti for sponsoring the U13 floating trophy.

This was won by ACC’s own Toti Hawks team under the leadership of Luke Bowley. This team played really well, and finished the day unbeaten in the league. The U11 floating trophy was won by one of the visiting teams from Durban Cricket Academy, which also finished unbeaten in their round-robin phase. That trophy was donated by Lords and Legends, and ACC is always truly thankful for their efforts and assistance.

Individual winners were as follows from the various age groups:

U11 Little League: All of these players made a fantastic contribution to their games at this early stage in their cricketing careers. It was decided to award the most valuable player trophy to Ivan Herrewyn who scored the most runs and took a wicket for his team.

U11: The winning team who were awarded the Lords and Legends trophy were the DCA2 team. Best batsman award went to De Wet, one of the DCA players. Best bowling went to ACC’s own Jason Butler. The MVP awards per team were Seshni Naidu Toti Panthers; Jordan van Zyl Toti Jaguars; Yusuf DCA1; Jack DCA 2.

U13: The winning team lifting the Merc Auto Specialist floating trophy was Toti Hawks. Best batsman went to Morne Nel who scored an unbeaten 50. This is no mean feat in a game of only 30 deliveries. Best bowling prize was shared between Leo from the DCA team, and Stephan Vosloo from the Toti Eagles. MVP trophies were awarded to the lads as follows: Corne Nel Toti Eagles; Mathew Crookes Toti Falcons; Luke Bowley Toti Hawks; Sachin DCA Lions.

The club again extends its thank to the various sponsors. The small trophies handed out to the little league players will be cherished, as will the individual prizes awarded in the various age groups. ACC’s heartfelt thanks to Rex, Jan and all on the fundraising committee for their efforts.

The club is also grateful to the senior team players who gave of their time to assist with umpiring duties. The event was well received and enjoyed by all. The club was feeling its way in this first tournament, and has gained valuable insight into hosting this event. ACC now looks forward to the next event of this type, when the seniors host a similar challenge but with many more invited teams. The club is working towards having a 32-team competition over three days in December, after the close of the local league for the holiday break. ACC now looks forward to that challenge.
