Athletics club needs helpers for Sapphire Coast Marathon

The club informs members of the AGM which will take place on 26 October at Lords and Legends.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club appeals to companies or groups of 10 people to man and assist at water tables along the route for the Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon on 16 October.

Water and cold drinks, ice, bottles and tables will be supplied by the club – all they need is help to give to the athletes’ refreshments as they pass. Contact Chris by email at stange@lantic.net or 083-301-3632.

The club’s 40-year celebration was cancelled due to bad weather forecast on the weekend. The new date is 8 October at the clubhouse starting at 2pm. Members pay R30, which includes meat and salads, while the R15 due by non-members includes salads but they should take along their your own meat. RSVP with Belinda by 3 October for catering purposes on 083-408-0639. A cash bar will be available.

Upcoming races: 25 September Ethekwini Township to Township Marathon 42.2km/21.1km run race starts at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi at 5.30am and finishes at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu. Pre-entries close on 20 September.

2 October: The Duke of York 16km run/walk and a 5km run/walk by Collegians Harriers in Pietermaritzburg at the Bishopstowe Hall starts at 6.30am. Pre-entry for the 16km event is two weeks before.

2 October: Newlands Challenge 42.2/21.1km run and 10km run/walk at Newlands Athletic Club starting at 5am, pre-entry and late entries.

The club walker’s championship will take place at the following races:

10km: 30 October KZN Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium starting at 7am; 21km: 6 November Checkout Challenge at Kings Park Athletic Stadium starting at 6.30am.

Entries for the Goss and Balfe Sapphire Coast Marathon on 6 October are open. This race will run/walk from Hutchison Park and back, due to Metro Rail’s damaged railway line. This is a pre-entry race, with the closing date of 8 October. Visit https://www.eventtiming.co.za/gossbalfe

Club members cannot participate in the race. A helpers run will take place on 8 October starting at the club at 4.30am. Club vests must be worn and refreshments will be supplied. This is for members only and their finishing times can be used as a Two Oceans and Comrades qualifier.

Time trial results

  • 4km run: J Duvenhage 19.34, M Mzimela 26.15, N Mbhele 26.15.
  • 8km run: M Hlengwa 51.00, S Msomi 51.31, R Hair 51.32.
  • 4km walk: S van der Merwe 35.50, D van der Merwe 36.00, B Wagner 36.00, S Coulter 36.00, J Williams 36.00.

Should you not be able to do your alloted time trial duties, make arrangements for someone to stand in for you. On 28 September, Des van der Merwe and Marco Coetsee are on time trial duty.

Note that reflective belts are mandatory for time trials.

Weekly time trials are on Wednesday for walkers at 5.30pm and runners at 6pm (both over 4km and 8km. Visitors are welcome to join and should meet at the clubhouse at Hutchison Park. On Saturdays there is an 11km run and walk from the clubhouse at 5.30am for walkers and 6am for runners. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served afterwards.
