Dolphins drop in on Winkle SLC open day

Friday evening saw Winklespruit well represented at the canoe race on the Umgeni river with Dylan Barber winning the guppies’ race.

FINALLY the big day arrived at Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club last Sunday.

On the club open day, which indicates the start of the summer lifesaving season, it was of course raining. Nipper officer Gary Barber admitted there were a few anxious moments but luckily the rain and wind held off and proceedings continued as planned. The turnout was fantastic and the enthusiasm of the children, especially the new nippers, was a sight to behold. Thanks to all who helped.

The juniors and seniors held their first training session with a swim around the Winkle rocks, with a few nippers joining them. They were blessed with a visit by passing dolphins, which was a first for many of them. The day then just got better and better, with parents enjoying a good old South African braai in the afternoon. All in all, it was a great day at Winkle.

Friday evening saw Winklespruit well represented at the canoe race on the Umgeni River, where Dylan Barber won the guppies race. Mark ‘I love to swim in the Umgeni River – twice’ Barber really wanted to be included in this week’s article so he came up with this game plan – and it worked. Well done to all who paddled.

Another reminder to members that subs are due – club treasurer Fran Techet has ordered a hunting outfit and will be after all members shortly.

See you on the beach.
