Sun City trip up for grabs by UGC’s regional cancer challenge finalists

The jackpot was won by Stanley Mfeka on 11 good points but the hidden birdie which is edging towards R400, will be carried over to next week as will the attendance draw and the football sweep.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club has a busy week ahead – Annette Gillett and Linda Toward are travelling up to Kloof GC to play in the regional finals of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge. This is after they have won their sections at club level a few weeks ago. The pay-off is that if they win this round, they’re in for a trip to Sun City, all expenses paid, to play in the absolute final. Two years ago, UGC’s own Sabiha Bacaus won the regional final, having a wonderful golfing experience up at Sun City. Good luck to both women playing at Kloof on Sunday, 28 August.

Last WednesdayUGC’s midweek golfers played their normal individual stableford and there’s a new winner taking home the first prize – it’s Peter Williamson doing his ‘thing’ and winning the competition with his superb 43 points, followed by Dave Kemp in second place with 41 points. Michelle van der Merwe counted out Derek Airey for third place, leaving Derek to wallow in fourth spot, both on 38 points. It was nice to see Hans Beuthe back on the course again.

Last Saturday the weather was a bit dodgy to start with, with rain threatening the whole day but there were a few intrepid golfers who braved to cloudy conditions and played the alliance league as normal. The winning team comprising of Denise Nell, Bing Opie, Keith Pedrick and Kuben Naidoo scooped the first prize with their 88 points with the team of Barrie Taylor, Jacques Kirstein, Stanley Mfeka and Bruce Sutcliffe taking second place on 83 points.

The jackpot was won by Stanley Mfeka on 11 good points but the hidden birdie which is edging towards R400, will be carried over to next week as will the attendance draw and the football sweep.

Last Sunday, the league women played their fourth SCR league matches at Scottburgh GC but unfortunately lost to Amanzimtoti. Sabiha Bacaus and Annette Gillett drew their match in dramatic fashion on the last hole but unfortunately Toti was a tad strong for the rest of the Umkomaas teams. No worries, there is always the final at San Lameer in September to make up for last Sunday.

Dates to diarise: On Friday, 26 August, the club will host the next quiz nite – these social evenings are reputed to be noisy and great fun so go down to the club and enjoy a fun-filled evening with old friends and prospective new ones. This is a great opportunity to exercise your ‘grey matter’ and see exactly how smart you actually are. These evenings are for everyone to enjoy with much hilarity and laughter. All this will only cost you R60 per person and your contact to book your team’s table is John Thompson on 082-322-4920.

On Saturday, 27 August the Cadac sponsored day takes place. All thanks to Matt Hamer for organising the prizes for this event. UGC welcomes all officially handicapped golfers to join on Saturday for a splendid day of golf and friendship. Call the club office on 039-973-1042 to book your tee time.

Note the phone number for the golf shop no longer exists. While the girls go up to Kloof GC to play in the Sanlam Cancer Challenge regional finals, the club will be having its monthly craft market in the car park on Sunday, 28 August. These craft markets have some real bargains with bottled jams, pickles and so on as well as other ‘stuff’ on offer. Go on down and have a browse around the stalls, you might find something you really need.

As always there is six-pin on Friday afternoons starting at 3pm – not forgetting KidzGolf on Saturday mornings between 8am and 9am on the practice putting green. The ‘Geriatrics’ play on Tuesday and Fridays only, at 7am – arrive early to get the special green fees rate.

The contact for the ‘Gerries’ is either Keith on 083-305-5740 or Graham on 083-325-5705. Find UGC online at www.umkomaasgolf.co.za
