UGC awaits outcome of South Coast regional women’s golf

Note that the grey swipe cards will no longer be of any use after Monday, 1 August.

SIX Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) women went off to play in the South Coast regional championships last Sunday, 17 July at Amanzimtoti Golf Club.

Sabiha Bacaus, Michelle van der Merwe and Lesa Vergottini played in the silver division – everyone is keenly awaiting the final results.

Annette Gillett, Bryony Rogers and Denise Nell played in the bronze division with varying degrees of success as well. On Monday, 18 July, four of the ‘musketeers’ who played in the champs are off to Zimbali Golf Club to play in the Mercedes Classic. Good luck to all and travel safely. Hopefully the results will be to hand in time for next week’s issue.

Wednesday was as always the individual stableford. Warwick Head was warmly welcomed. Last week, with no surprise at all after playing a stupendous round of golf, Richard Andersson clinched first prize on a great 43 points. Simon van den Bosch took home second prize with 42 points (it must have been that missed putt somewhere), with Fred Welch taking third spot, counting out John Thompson into fourth place, both on 41 points.

Last Saturday’s competition was slightly different from the ‘norm’, being the individual bonus bogey competition. Club captain, Jimmy Spear welcomed Erich van Rooyen, Tony Beach and the Hesom’s, Selwyn and Annabelle. It looks as though the women have this competition ‘wrapped up’ since it was Annette Gillett in the winner’s seat with +4, followed by visitor Tony Beach on +3, Lesa Vergottini taking third place with +2, counting out Dave Kemp into fourth place, also with +2.

Both the jackpot and the hidden birdie will be carried over to next weekend but there were five two-clubs – Annette Gillett, Eric Morsner, Dave Mulroy and Keith Vergottini, all on the fourth hole and Devlyn Fraser on the 13th. The attendance draw was scooped up by Ken Koster. Well played.

Next Saturday, 23 July the competition will be a fourball betterball competition with social golf on Sunday, 24 July. Call the club to book your time on 039-973-1042.

UGC hosts its annual fundraising day on Saturday, 13 August. All visitors are welcome to go along and join in the fun. To all members and sponsors – a gentle reminder that prizes and donations are needed to make it a great day – be generous with both. The time sheet is in the office, book early as carts are very limited.

Members may have noticed that their swipe cards have changed and are now black. Note that the grey swipe cards will no longer be of any use after Monday, 1 August. For local members who haven’t fetched their new cards yet, they can be collected at the club. Be aware that log-in and pin number details remain the same, as on your grey card, unless you have changed them. You may still log on manually or online with the numbers on the grey card but your old card will not register on the computer. If you need help at all, call the office. Cards have been posted to UGC’s upcountry members – hopefully they won’t take too long to reach you.

Another reminder that the two-day Aliwal Stroll golf tournament takes place on Sunday, 7 August and Monday, 8 August. Call John Thompson on 082-322-4920.

KidzGolf starts up again on Saturday, 23 July at the club between 8am and 9am. Devlyn, Lindani and Mike look forward to welcoming everyone back to the practice putting green next Saturday morning.
