LAST Sunday Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) composite league men played at Royal Durban Golf Club with good and not-so-good results.

UGC lost to Selborne by one point but the club defeated Royal by one shot on their own turf.

That’s the not-so-good news and shows how close the scoring was. The good news is that Mike Cromhout and Jacques Kirstein won the betterball competition with John Gillett and Derek Airey coming in second place. So it’s not all doom and gloom. Well done the four of you, UGC is so proud.

Wednesday’s competition was the individual stableford and the club welcomed Anton Kotze and Herman Steyn. Once again, Wally Kent is in the prizes, this time first, counting out Chris Viljoen, both on 37 points. Dave Kemp took third place, counting out Michelle van der Merwe, both on 33 points.

Last Saturday was the sixth round of the alliance league, which is always well supported. The club welcomed Erich van Rooyen and Allan Eriksen, not forgetting the Morsner boys, Dean and Dwayne. The winners were ‘The Blue Brothers’ Devlyn Fraser, Saga Reddy, Nelson Moonsamy and Mike Cromhout on a good score of 91 points, just pipping the ‘XLC’s Boys’ (ex Lady Captain) Dave Mulroy, Annette Gillett, Rob Finlay and John Gillett into second spot with 90 points. Saga Reddy won the jackpot on offer with 10 points but the hidden birdie (12th hole) went a-begging again this week. The kitty for the hidden birdie is growing every week and should reach R300 soon – it’s well worth winning. There were only two two-clubs (admittedly it was a tad windy during the afternoon) – visitor Allan Eriksen had one and Nelson Moonsamy the other. The attendance draw bag pulled Jacques Hulley’s name out but unfortunately he had already left. Michelle van der Merwe snatched the ‘birds’ in the football sweep.

Saturday, 16 July is an individual bonus bogey competition, something different to shake things up a bit. This a rather challenging competition albeit a bit daunting for some players but the fun comes in trying to score birdies and pars with no minuses. Sunday, 17 July will be a social day – call the club to book a time on 039-973-1042.

The MegaMaster golf day which was to have been in July has been postponed until further notice. Watch this space for the new date.

On Friday, 29 July, the club hosts a fundraising day for the Reinhardt Home for Autistic Adults. These special people need special care and with the costs of just about everything going up month after month, funds are urgently needed. The cost is R250 for green fees which includes a light meal afterwards. Call Annette Gillet for a tee time. These special people need the support.

Early in August, on Sunday and Monday, 7 and 8 August, the club launches the inaugural two-day Aliwal stroll tournament. The format will be both a betterball and alliance. Contact John Thompson on 082-322-4920 for more details about this exciting new competition.

KidzGolf will start up again on Saturday, 23 July just after the school term starts. All children are welcome to practise during the holidays or play a round of golf.
