Val conquers Great Wall marathon

Val, a type 1 insulin-dependent diabetic for 30 years, described the marathon as the world's third hardest race.

Warner Beach’s Val Opperman conquered the T1 diabetics 42.2km marathon along the Great Wall of China and is rearing to tackle her next challenge.

Val, a type 1 insulin-dependent diabetic for 30 years, described the 21 May marathon as the world’s third hardest race, but she loved every minute.

“It was hard, especially the 5,164 steps we had to climb,” she enthused. “The steps were hectic.”

Val, who usually runs a sub five-hour marathon, completed the gruelling challenge in 7.51. “You have to add at least one-and-a-half hours to your normal marathon time.

My main aim is to inspire other diabetics.” Having being diagnosed at the age of 19, Val’s mission is to create awareness of the disease. “A lot of people may have it, but don’t know it. Awareness is the key, along with a healthy lifestyle which includes good eating habits and exercise.”

Val is more of an ultra distance runner and has completed two Comrades Marathon and a Two Oceans Marathon. She only took up running four years ago, but now that the bug has bit, she is keen to experience more iconic runs around the world.

Next on her bucket list is the Reggae Marathon in Jamaica on 3 December. “I want to run in exotic places and meet interesting people around the world,” said Val.
