Toti AC’s top Comrades runners blaze a trail

Note that reflective belts are mandatory for time trials.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club’s (AAC) Jabulani Shishani and Karen Sobrino took the lead as the first Toti man and woman runners home at this year’s Comrades Marathon.

The feedback from AAC’s athletes this year was that the start was heartwarming with the singing of the national anthem, the playing of Chariots of Fire, as well as the sound of the cannon to start the 91st Comrades Marathon with 20,000 runners setting off to make the epic journey to Durban.

The weather was good but it did get hotter in the latter stages of the day. Once again the crowds and supporters were placed along the route to cheer on the athletes.

Karen Sobrino, the club’s first woman home, was the 37th woman home overall and 12th in her age category. Well done to her.

Congratulations to Steven Yelseth and Mark McCalgan on completing their 10th Comrades and welcome to the green club.

To everyone who finished and achieved their personal goals, well done. To those few who never finished, come back strong next year and learn from your mistakes.
