Close scores among depleted UGC fourball field

Saturday's competition was a 4 Ball Better Ball but considering most of our local members played on Sunday, the field was quite small.

THIS week it’s congratulations to Umkomaas Golf Club’s women’s section for hosting a successful hey day women’s mixed open golf day plus a craft and food market last Sunday.

For those who didn’t play golf, there were loads of different stalls to meet everyone’s taste, with something for everyone.

Well done to woman captain, Linda Toward and her team for organising such a brilliant day. The golf prizes were also fantastic, very different to the normal golf prizes usually on offer. The winners on Sunday were Dave Mulroy, Michelle van der Merwe, Derek Airey and Simon van den Bosch. Nearest the pin winners were Annette Gillett – fourth; Sabiha Bacaus – ninth; Sean Jenkins – 13th and Lesa Vergottini – 17th. The longest drive on the seventh for the men was Mike Cromhout and the straightest drive on the 18th for the women was Denise Nell. Nearest the pin for three shots on the 18th for the girls was Michelle van der Merwe. Congratulations to all the winners. Prizes were paid out to eighth place in total.

Wednesday’s game was the usual individual stableford with the winner last week being Keith Vergottini on 40 excellent points. Derek Airey took the second prize on a count-out from Lesa Vergottini who was third, both with 38 points.

Saturday’s competition was a fourball betterball but considering most local members played on Sunday, the field was quite small. Despite the depletion of players, the weather was glorious with extremely close scores in a points-filled afternoon. The scores were that close, the count-out system came into being again as Dave Kemp and John Thompson took the first prize, Keith Vergottini (again) and Bing Opie were in second place with Petros Langa and Anil Seepershad just making it into the prizes in third slot – all on 45 points. Keith has been playing such tremendous golf lately, it was no surprise he won the jackpot on 13 points. The hidden birdie (seventh hole) will be carried over once again. The kitty is up to R150 so far. John Thompson won the prize in the non-skills department – the attendance draw. There were only two two-clubs on Saturday, Petros Langa on the 4th and Jimmy Spear on the ninth holes.

This Saturday, 4 June is the Toyota monthly medal with social golf on Sunday, 5 June. Also happening on Sunday is composite league for the guys at UGC. Travel safely and play well, all of you. Call the club to book a time on Sunday on 039-973-1042.

KidzGolf has taken off like a rocket lately and it’s been wonderful to see all the youngsters at the club on Saturday mornings. Devlyn and Lindani would be delighted to introduce this fascinating game to all children between 8am and 9am on Saturdays during the school term. Call the club for more details.
