THIS month Amanzimtoti Bowling Club honoured two members with a club member of the month award for contributions to the club, as they are both always willing to give their time and skills for the enhancement of special events.

One went to Hettie van Niekerk for her long-standing services as umpire when the club hosts national and PN competitions.

She was also presented with a small token of appreciation by the competition secretaries.

The second award was presented to Alf Bingham in appreciation of all the times he supplies music at the club, and for his assistance with the floodlights.

Last weekend also saw the semi-finals and finals of the PN mixed pairs (Oppenheimers) being hosted very successfully by ABC. A good crowd watched Brad Lezar and Charmaine van der Westhuizen from Durban Bowling Club take the overall honours with some top-class bowling.

Congratulations to Doreen Salmond, Marion Crouch, Nita Meumann and Adrienne Robbins on winning their semi-final game in the midweek league plate, and the club hopes luck was on their side in the finals which were held Wednesday, 1 June.

In a close second round game in the men’s handicap singles, Trevor Zulch beat Gustav Somers, and in another second round game of men’s open singles Ian Mills beat Clive Frank. In women’s open singles Tokkie de Kock beat Nita Meumann, and in senior singles Pam Chalder-Royle beat Robyn Hutton.

In first round men’s nominated pairs Ian Shearer and Pete Shepard lost to Glen Scorgie and Mike Pitchers, and Peter Snyman and Wessie van der Westhuizen lost to Clive Frank and Carl van Heerden. In round two of the men’s drawn pairs, Vince Phaal and Greg Veldtman beat Tony Cam and Bill Williams, and Doug Joubert and Martin Birch beat Al McGregor and Kokkie de Kock.

Round four of the nominated mixed pairs went to Ian and Leonie Mills who beat Greg McLeod and Marion Crouch.

Thanks go to Allan and Denise Hawkin for providing prizes and drinks for the Victory Kwik Spar inter-club nominated mixed 2-4-2 once again. Winners were Paul and Jeannette Els, and runners-up were country members Martiens and Niki Botha. First session went to Glen Scorgie and Jackie Holdrick, and second session went to Talla Stephens-Viviers and Shane Tocher.

At TGIF the 100 board was won by the ever-lucky Damagers. Robbie Roberts’ tab was drawn in the attendance draw, but as he was not present, the pot rises to R350 next week. Bobby Henderson was unable to find the right key, so next week’s key draw will be R7,660.

Women’s league starts on Saturday, 4 June. The muttons will take place on Sunday, 5 June, and a new list is up for scroungers on Friday, 10 June, which will now be mixed. The first 27 names will get a game. Check the board for other cardings and dates, as certain games have had to be moved around because of PN fixtures. Don’t forget to enter your team for the women’s winter tournament on 29 and 30 June, and to take along any bric-a-brac for the sale table.

The only birthdays this week are Errol du Plessis and Vish Studinski, and get well wishes go to all members who are unwell.
