Thirds steal win from VC in dying moments

The third team travelled to Varsity College on Thursday night to take on a home team that has normally always had the better of the Toti ballies.

RESULTS from Amanzimtoti Rugby Club’s weekend fixtures:

First team report: Two tries in a six minute spell gave Amanzimtoti 1st team a vital 14-5 victory over Varsity College in round seven of the Fidelity Security Moor Cup at Riverside on Friday night.

The match was closely contested and was scoreless after 30 minutes, before Varsity College conceded a yellow card. Toti prop Thinus Volker broke the deadlock as he breached the defensive line with a strong run. A successful conversion from utility back Jaco de Jager saw the visitors take a 7-0 lead. A second yellow card to Varsity College allowed the visitors to stun them with a second try from Werner Botha just minutes later. Another successful conversion from De Jager saw Toti take a crucial 14-0 lead at the break. Though Varsity College pulled back a try in the second half from flanker Ray Williams, the visitors did enough to walk away with the victory.

The Eagle Canyon Spur man of the match awards went to John Wilsnach (forwards) and Werner Botha (backs).

Second team:

The second team got off to a good start with a forward drive from a line-out that saw Mike Uppink dotting down a try that was converted by Jason Heins. Toti was dominating most of the play, but overeagerness by a number of ball carriers saw some 50/50 passes not go to hand that led to turn-over ball that disrupted Toti’s forward momentum.

The mistakes kept Varsity College in the game, as they mostly capitalised on the mistakes. The second half saw another great move by Toti which led to Dylan Kelly going over for a try that was converted by Dylan Ackerman. A number of injuries and forced changes saw Toti’s momentum disrupted and the end result was that Varsity College took the spoils with a 14–20 victory. Over and above the try scorers, special mention should be made of Jacques Blignaut, Chad Fisher, Chad Kopke, Wayde Shore, Travis Clark, Peter Harmse and Gerhard Ingram who all played their hearts out.

The Eagle Canyon Spur man of the match awards went to Gerhard Ingram (forwards) and Chad Kopke (backs).

Third team:

The third team travelled to Varsity College on Thursday night to take on a home team that has normally always had the better of the Toti ballies.

True to form the game, belonged to the home side and with time up on the clock, Toti were trailing by 12 points. However, the ref had other ideas and called another four minutes running time due to stoppages during the game. This excited the ballies who promptly silenced the home crowd by running in two converted tries, leaving the thirds victors with a score of 27–25.

The first and second team next face College Rovers on Friday, 27 May. The match takes place at Hutchison Park and kick-off is at 6.30pm and 8pm. The third team takes on Hillcrest at Hutchison Park on Saturday, 28 May with kick-off scheduled for 3.30pm. It would be great to see a number of the club’s loyal supporters join in for a fun evening with some great rugby being played by the club’s talented youngsters.

Thank you to all the club’s sponsors and supporters who make it all possible for it to sustain in such a competitive league.
