Road cyclists spoilt for choice this weekend

There are two road events happening in and around Durban this coming weekend.

WITH Amanzimtoti Cycling Club’s famous Hypersure Toti69er race just a mere seven weeks away, the roadies are starting to prepare and build up towards this long-awaited event.

Last weekend the roadies joined up with a couple of other Durban clubs to enjoy the camaraderie and spirit of riding together.

It turned out to be a rather large group and the Toti riders took them on one of their regular rides to Fibres and Isipingo Hills, which they thoroughly enjoyed, having not been on these routes before. The club plans to do more rides together with other Durban clubs on a regular basis.

On Sunday, the roadies did a pacy ride up to the Bluff and back, which really stretched their legs, thanks to Carl Freyer who needed to up his heart rate for points he requires for his medical aid. Thanks Carl.

There are two road events happening in and around Durban this coming weekend. Firstly, there is the monthly ‘Critical Mass’ ride on Friday evening, 27 May, starting at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 6pm, which is a slow ride of about 20km to help promote safe cycling among all cyclists. The organisers will have the spray-on Volvo life paint for everyone to try out, which is a reflective clear paint that lights up at night when a car’s lights shines on it but does no damage to the bicycle paint or your clothes. While the safety aspect of cycling on the roads is still a hot topic, why not go along and support this great initiative.

On Sunday, 29 May the second road event takes place when the ever-popular monthly Green Hub ride starts at 6.30am from the Green Hub at Blue Lagoon. There are four different rides that people can choose from – 10km family ride, 25km beginners ride, 45km intermediate ride and 75km advanced ride. The cost is R50 per rider which includes a free coffee and muffin. All profits go to the Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC). Registration takes place between 5.30am and 6.30am.

Happy cycling everyone.
