Alliance league likely to be a tough slog for golfers

The Sardine Run is creeping up fast and only is a month away

LAST week’s weather certainly has been a lovely week for golf.

Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) Wednesday individual stableford competition was won by Barrie Taylor on an excellent 43 points.

Second was John Thompson also on a good score off 42 points. Third was Peter Vermark on 36.

Last Saturday’s competition was fourball better ball stableford. The captain firstly welcomed visitor Selwyn Hesom to the club. Winners on a fantastic score of 48 points were Bing Opie and Dave Mulroy, second were Graham Coxell and John Gillett on 46 points and third were Simon Van Der Bosch and Mike Harvard on 43 points, counting out Barrie Taylor and Jacques Kirstein.

The jackpot was won by John Gillett on 12 points. The hidden birdie was for hole 17 and unfortunately there were no winners so it will be carried over until next week. Jacques Kirstein was drawn for the attendance draw but had unfortunately already gone home so that will be carried over until next Saturday.

This Saturday’s competition is the alliance league. This will be the fourth one of the year and looking at the scores, this is definitely going to be a tough year to be on top. If you are not in a team and still would like a game, phone the club as there is always a team looking for someone to fill in.

The women’s league side will be travelling to Port Edward this Sunday to play against Port Shepstone. UGC wishes them everything of the best for their first league game and knows they will be flying the Umkomaas flag high.

This Sunday is also Strand Strikers sponsorship day. The competition will be shot-gun start fourball alliance. For any players wanting to play in the fun-filled day, the list is on the club notice board so put your names down or call the club and they will happily put your names down.

There is only two weeks left for the women’s ‘hey day’ sponsor day on 29 May. The competition is fourball alliance. The time sheets are on the board. There will also be a craft market. For full details call women’s captain, Linda Toward on 083-787-7766.

The Sardine Run is creeping up fast and only is a month away, so enter your names soon at www.sardinegolf.co.za – just follow the links. The club also requests members to sponsor either a bottle of booze or non-perishables for the wheelbarrow which the club will raffle off that weekend.

On 3 June, UGC will be having a darts and pool competition at the clubhouse. Diarise and watch out for further details.

Sad news for UGC is the death of Robbie Small who was an honorary member of the club and the oldest living member. Sincere condolences go out to the Small, Mulroy and Leisergang families. Members’ thoughts and prayers are with them during this sad time.

More sad news is the death of Siva and Selvie Naidoo, who were tragically killed in a car accident. Siva spent a lot of time at the club, fixing carts and the course’s heavy machinery. Sincere condolences go out their families too and members’ prayers and thoughts are with them as well.
