Wallace shaves 30 minutes off his 3rd 36One MTB race time

It’s the third year in a row that Malcolm has ridden this stage-race, but this year he followed a training programme devised by a Belgian and he managed to shave 30 minutes off his time

THIS past Sunday, 17 April, saw the seventh edition of the Compendium MTB Derby held at Shongweni Polo Club in Hillcrest.

There were events that catered for the whole family and Amanzimtoti Cycling Club’s MTB Mambas did the club proud with podium positions.

Well done, guys and girls on your excellent riding.

20km: First in age category Gareth Weitz 1.04.16, Byron Mercer 1.16.45, Christo Hugo 1.18.41, third in category Clayton Hugo 1.19.05, Tegan Weitz 1.40.03.

45km: First in age category Imke Potgieter 2.56.53.

Malcolm Wallace, another Amanzimtoti Cycling Club Mamba member, participated in the ultimate single-stage mountain bike race in South Africa this past weekend, 36One MTB Challenge in Oudtshoorn.

He was allowed no stops and had 36 hours to complete it. It’s the third year in a row that Malcolm has ridden this stage-race, but this year he followed a training programme devised by a Belgian and he managed to shave 30 minutes off his time and, more importantly, he wasn’t stiff or sore the next day – a huge achievement. At each checkpoint he recovered by chatting for a good half an hour (there were three checkpoints) and Malcolm didn’t walk once, unlike during his previous 36One races. His diet allowed potato, rice and sweet potato, but no pasta or bread and it took him 25:00:16 to finish. He was doing it to raise funds for the Levi Lionheart Foundation – a charity which raises awareness of children’s cancer. The club congratulates you, Malcolm – you must be extremely proud of what you have achieved, as the club certainly is.
