Toti’s 10 try win kicks off Moor Cup campaign

Toti next take on Zululand Rhinos at Mick Kelly Park in Empangeni on Saturday.

TOTI Rugby Club’s 1st team got their Fidelity Security Moor Cup campaign off to a flying start with 10-try 65-16 romp over newly promoted South Coast Warriors at Growth Point Kings Park on Saturday afternoon.

As predicted, the Warriors came out of the starting blocks hard in an effort to put the more fancied team off their rhythm, and for the opening 20 minutes Toti were forced into an arm wrestle for possession and territory.

Once things had settled, however, Toti began to take charge of the game and by half time had a comfortable 27-11 lead with the four-try bonus point already in the bag.

The second half saw Toti turn up the heat a little more to run in a further six tries. Warriors, to their credit, never gave up the fight, and were rewarded with a try mid-way through the second half, but that was never going to be enough to stem the tide against a Toti side who many believe could well be title contenders this year. However these are early days yet and there are plenty of games yet to play before any predictions can be made.

Tries were scored by right winger Chad Fisher, left wing Mynhardt van Schalkwyk (2), scrum half Werner Botha, centre Tyron Brand, flyhalf Jose Rodrigues, number eight Conrad Mostert, locks Pieter Harmse and John Wilsnach and flanker Kevin Buck. The balance of the points came from the boot of Rodrigues.

The Eagle Canyon Spur man of the match awards went to Kevin Buck (forwards) and Jose Rodrigues (backs)

The 2nd team also got their campaign off to a good start with a convincing 65–3 victory over South Coast Warriors and all looks good for a productive season.

The Eagle Canyon Spur man of the match awards went to Pieter Haremse (forwards) and Charl Oosterhuizen (backs).

Toti next take on Zululand Rhinos at Mick Kelly Park in Empangeni on Saturday. Toti’s next home game is on Saturday, 16 April against UKZN Impi.
