Seals figure skaters keen to grow

Last year was a tough one for the club after the closure of the ice rink.

Toti Seals Club plans to bounce back from a tough 2015 with a full year of events planned.

“Our year kicks off with an Easter show, showcasing our small and not so small amateur skaters,” said head coach of the figure skating club, Wendy Van Der Hammen.

The club holds its annual competition on 13 August, where all skaters get the chance to compete. Most of these skaters will perform in front of an audience for the first time.

In December the club will host a Christmas show, as it does every year.

“Last year was a tough one for our club. From a strong figure skating club of over 150 members comprising all ages, races and sizes, we dropped to less than half of that after the closure of the ice rink last April.

The rink has re-opened and it looks beautiful. Because of the closure, many skaters took up other sports and we lost some of the best skating talent in the province during this period. Now it’s time to fight and get back the numbers,” said Wendy.

Toti Seals Figure Skating Club is a young and dynamic club. “Not only does our skating and test schedule follow an international standard, but we were also the first club in the province to include adult skating. We operate year round and only close for Christmas and New Year.”
