Amanzimtoti cyclists ride the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour

The 109km ride around Cape’s spectacular peninsula was complemented with magnificent weather, as testified by those who have ridden this race 21 times.

THE highly-anticipated cycling event on the international cycling calendar came around once again and 20 odd Amanzimtoti cyclists got to ride the largest and most beautiful individually timed event in the world, the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

Not all made the long journey by air as some were more adventurous and went by car, with some stopping on the way to enjoy a few more days of training rides through the Eastern Cape.

The 109km ride around Cape’s spectacular peninsula was complemented with magnificent weather, as testified by those who have ridden this race 21 times. This was reflected in some excellent times by Toti’s riders, with Gerrie van Biljon coming in first with a sub three-hour time of 2:58:59, followed very closely by Wilhelm Tesnaar in a time of 3:00:43 (an extra spurt would have given him a sub three hour time, Willie).

Young prodigy, Dylan Chapman came in third in 3.03.03 and Dillon Holm in 3.06.50. Out of 35,000 entrants, only about 28,500 finished, so a very well done to all those Toti riders who completed the race. Hopefully, Cape Town will see a much larger contingent of orange shirts next year.

Gerrie van Biljon 2.58.59 Wilhelm Tesnaar, 3.00.43, Dylan Chapman 3.03.03, Dillon Holm 3.06.50, Fred van Zyl 3.20.58, Shelley Higgo 3.21.43, Carl Freyer 3.22.19, Ron Waldburger 3.29.50, Pierre le Roux 3.29.52, Colin Bedingfield 4.00.33, Adrian Bradshaw 4.08.32, Butch Grant 4.19.06, Steve van Rooyen 4.23.07, Drienie Willers 4.28.17, Michael Cousins 4.29.58, Hennie Nell 5.50.30, Roland Bezuidenhout 5.50.30, Carol Raasch 5.55.26, Peter du Plessis 6.17.25.

Not to be out done, Toti’s Mambas enjoyed the Howick Classic MTB race which was held on the same day as the Cape Town Cycle Tour at Howick High School. All enthusiastic and energetic, the riders were well tested by a tough course and hot temperatures. All riders achieved excellent times and overall, it was an enjoyable event.
