Toti juniors deliver national-class track performances

The club's athletes achieved first positions in the majority of events that they competed in.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club’s juniors dominated proceedings at the annual Umlazi Schools Athletics district trials that took place last week at the Chatsworth Stadium.

The club’s athletes achieved first positions in the majority of events that they competed in.

The outstanding performance of the meeting was once again delivered by the club’s Lee-anne Blake (Kingsway High) when she ran in front from the start, unchallenged in the G15 800m and won the event in a new personal best time of 2:10.41. This easily surpassed the fastest time run nationally up to that stage in the event by her peers in the current athletics season.

Another event that delivered a national level performance was the G15 400m in which Lee-anne won again in a time of 58.11sec despite her earlier effort in the 800m, and was this time pushed right to the line by her training partner, Sesi Mbatha (also Kingsway), whose time of 58.77sec in second place was also her personal best time. Lee-anne and Sesi are both now among the top performers nationally in this event as well.

A total of eight boys and five girls from Kingsway and Kuswag schools receiving coaching at the club were selected for the Umlazi District athletics team to compete at the large KZN junior athletics championships on Friday, 11 March and Saturday, 12 March at the Chatsworth Stadium. This is the largest provincial junior athletics championship in the country, with teams from all 11 districts of the province as well as club athletes competing. Quite a number more of the club’s junior athletes will also be in action in this event, in which some top performances are expected if the weather co-operates.
