Toti cyclists dot podium at Midmar Notts race

Those roadies who couldn't make the Midmar Notts race enjoyed a coastal ride to Scottburgh, averaging a comfortable 24 km/hr.

THE annual Midmar Notts road cycle race was held on Sunday on the scenic Midlands Meander route.

The start was moved from Midmar Dam to St Ives, which is opposite Piggly Wiggly.

This added 2.5kms to the 80km distance and times were therefore slightly slower than last year.

The fairly low temperature of 15 degrees at 6am allowed for a fresh start and the Amanzimtoti Cycling Club cyclists enjoyed the ideal conditions.

Toti was reasonably well represented with impressive times from Wesley Parker-Dennison and his sister Candice who both came 2nd in their age category (elite male and female respectively) and Colin Mckay who came 2nd in the open males age category. Young gun Dylan Chapman continues to impress with his great time as well as the women, Shelley Higgo and Rienie Beneke.

Carl Fryer started out like Mark Cavendish but unfortunately punctured near the halfway mark, but still managed a respectable time. Pierre Le Roux achieved his personal best, proving that age is but a number.

Results: Wesley Parker-Dennison 2.0.33, Bryan Cusack 2.06.00, Bryan Powell 2.07 (unofficial), Dylan Chapman 2.09.12, Wilhem Tesnaar 2.09.14, Shalltin Beneke 2.14.42, Lawrence Herron 2.16.11, Candice Parker-Dennison 2.17.02, Fred van Zyl 2.25.52, Colin Mckay 2.25.55, Shelley Higgo 2.31.10, Ron Waldburger 2.32.21, Pierre le Roux 2.32.24, Rienie Beneke 2.43.13, Carl Fryer 2.43.12, Adrian Bradshaw 2.44.51.

Those roadies who couldn’t make the Midmar Notts race enjoyed a coastal ride to Scottburgh, averaging a comfortable 24 km/hr. It’s all good training for Argus on 6 March.

The Toti MTB Mambas chose the Cedara Race, previously the Subaru Classic. It took place at Cedara College and provided riders with an unique venue and route. Brennan Anderson, Arthur Snel, Werner Hefer, Sean Jansen van Rensburg, Caryn and Gavin Harvey all enjoyed the 40kms of technical, single track. It was fairly slippery in the forests but there were no falls to report.

Like the roadies, not all members like to race and those Mambas enjoyed riding at Virginia Farm on Saturday and Renishaw on Sunday.

This coming Saturday, 27 February, about 10 Mambas are riding from Toti to Margate – a staggering 100kms. A Pickfords van will be behind them all the way.

For those who aren’t quite ready to ride 100kms, there’s another Bushlife Adventures outride taking place on Saturday, starting from Umdoni Golf Club, with a choice of 50kms and 35kms. Visit their website for details.
