Clansthal rally revved for action

Spectators are welcome and admission is free.

Head to Clansthal this weekend for the first round of the 2016 Rallysprint Series.

Toti local Matt Hendy, the defending champion, and Gavin Whitely of Umkomaas are sure to make the dust fly on their quads at Finningley Estates on Saturday.

In the cars, Toti’s Llewellyn Blackler and his wife Sandy will be tearing up the sugarcane fields in their VW Golf. Llewellyn is quite new to the sport and it is Sandy’s first event in the hot seat.

They have given their Golf a comprehensive off-season going over, so they look forward to getting in some fast stage mileage.

The 2015 KZN champions, Chris de Wit and Toti’s Brian Clifton will have to push their Corolla hard, as they face a challenge from the 2015 SA S1600 champions, Guy Botterill and Simon Vacy-Lyle’s Etios.

The stage being run on Saturday is almost nine kilometres on the farm’s dirt roads. Each vehicle will have five runs over the stage, giving a total distance of almost 45km.

Crews make use of safety notes (known as pace notes). The notes allow the navigators to keep up a constant stream of instructions to the driver, informing them of each bend in the road as it arrives.

This assists the driver to set up the car before each corner, which increases the speed of the car through the corner and into the next one.

Naturally this all produces some extremely exciting and close racing, which also means great spectating.

Spectators are welcome and admission is free.

To get there, follow the N2 South to the Scottburgh turn-off, then follow the red arrows.
