Shroders make waves with 55th Midmar swim

"If you've got a life, lead it. Don't sit and wish you had done it," advised Lynn.

TOTI swimming instructor, Lynn Schroder and her husband Lawrence completed their 55th Midmar Mile at the weekend to bolster their record for most swims for a married couple.

The aqautic pair has swam the iconic open water race for the last 40 years. For the last 15 years they have opted to swim both days.

“On Saturday we swam in the family day together and it was lovely swim,” said Lynn. “On the Sunday we swam separate and I had a harder swim, as the water was rougher. I swam backstroke, so I think I ended up swiming an extra three miles with my erratic zig-zagging,” she joked.

Lynn has taught swimming from the age of 17 and now at 70-years-old has never missed a season.

As an instructor she swims in the women 30-years and older and 13-years and under category on the Sunday.

“It was great to be part of such an event and very emotional.

I’ve taught thousands of people to swim over the years and I absolutely love it. Nowadays I’m teaching a lot of adults how to swim.”

After retiring from teaching at Kingsway High School last year, Lynn and Lawrence, who also retired last year, are not sitting back and letting life pass them by.

In March they will swim the Ebenezer Mile on 19 March in Magoebaskloof in the Limpopo province.

“We leave for Venice on 11 May to cycle through Slovenia and into Croatia along the North Adriatic Sea. We will cycle for about 50km a day.”

In August they will once again visit their daughter Cathy in Australia.

Last year they cycled through Vietnam.

“If you’ve got a life, lead it. Don’t sit and wish you had done it,” advised Lynn.
