Blazing Blake unstoppable

Lee-anne has now remained unbeaten in competitions in her age group on the track on all levels

THIS past weekend saw the third track and field league event presented by KZN Athletics at the Chatsworth Stadium.

While a number of Amanzimtoti Athletics Club juniors had a well-deserved break from competition, the meeting produced some exceptional results despite the hot and blustery conditions.

Electronic timing was used, making the results creditable and counting towards achieving of selection standards.

First positions in their events were achieved by Hlengiwe Zuma (G19 800m) and Lwazi Luthuli (B17 400m), as well as masters athletes Llewellyn Van Onselen and Riaan Vosloo.

However, the already hot track was set on fire by the performances, once again, of Lee-anne Blake. First she won the 800m G15 event, clocking an incredible time of 2.11.69 despite the heat, windy conditions, and having to run alone, well ahead of her opponents. This time is currently the second fastest in SA so far this year recorded by a girl in her age group. It was also the best performance of the meeting by an young athlete competing, and the time was faster than the winning time in the senior women’s 800m.

A few hours later, with the wind now stronger, she competed against fresh opposition in the 400m G15 event, winning in an exceptional time at the coast of 58.07. This is currently the fastest time by a girl in her age group in the event, despite it being the first 400m event she has competed in this season.

Lee-anne has now remained unbeaten in competitions in her age group on the track on all levels, including national, since April 2015.
