AMAMZIMTOTI Bowling Club was the host for the Port Natal men’s and women’s open singles last weekend.

The top players from the region delighted the packed club veranda for two days with a display of excellent bowls.

ABC had 14 men and six women playing. Best performers from Toti club were Greg McLeod and Lynn Joubert who made it through to the quarter finals before being knocked-out, so well done to both of them. Thank you to Hettie van Niekerk and Gerald Chalder-Royle for umpiring for the two days, and to the team of markers. Without them the competition could not have gone forward.

This week’s log-leaders in the Hypersure mixed trips are Doreen Salmond with Doug and Lynn Joubert on a 1.77 points average and 23 net, followed by Barbara Beamson, Marion Crouch and Mike Pitchers on 1.54 points average with a net of 21. In third place are Mike Groom, Jeanne Alexander and Neville Roscoe on 1.42 points average and a net of 15. The chocolate lucky draw also sponsored by Hypersure was won by Vera Broskie.

In a semi-final of the women’s drawn trips Nita Meumann, Tokkie de Kock and Maggie Robertson lost to Doreen Salmond, Denise Bingham and Gaynor Snyman; and in mixed pairs Greg McLeod and Marion Crouch had a good win against Heather Brown and Carl van Heerden.

Congratulations must go to Paul and Jeannette Els who picked up an eight in the mixed pairs competition. Well played.

This month’s winners of women’s 2-4-2 were Elmarie Young and Lys McDonald, with Amanda Ninow and Linda McGregor as runners-up. Elaine Critchlow and Norma Raath won the second session on a count-out, and Norma also won the 100 board.

At TGIF Les Brown won the 100 board; André Beetge’s social tab was drawn in the attendance draw, but as he was not present the pot will rise to R550 next week, and George Taylor’s key didn’t open the box, so that prize will be R8,630 next time.

Note the pensioners’ league will start on Tuesday, 15 March. Those who wish to play should add their name to the list on the pensioners’ board as soon as possible. There is also still space on the list for the Valentine’s Day fun challenge on Sunday, 14 February at 2pm. The format will be 10 ends of two bowl singles, played against your spouse/partner. For those on their own, playing partners will be drawn, so all entrants are welcome. Check the notice board for any other cardings over the weekend.

Birthday greetings this week go to Carl van Heerden, Les John, Barry Simpson, Linda McGregor, Ian McDonald, and special wishes to Hettie van Niekerk who turns 80. Finally ‘get well soon’ to any past or present members who are not in good health.
