John’s team takes alliance prize at UGC

Saturday, as mentioned above, was the Christmas alliance competition which was a major success with almost 90 players in the actual competition.

UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) hosted and celebrated a successful annual Christmas alliance on Saturday, 19 December, all thanks to the women’s section who sponsored all the prizes on the day.

With the extremely hot and humid weather, golfers went out in high spirits (with a little help from the pub) – (un)fortunately there wasn’t much of a wind to cool players down, but despite this, they returned within a reasonable time frame. The party afterwards was a ‘hoot’ – the main attraction of the evening was the R10,000 draw which was won by Rob Gilliver.

Wednesday’s competition broke away from the normal format last week – it was a fourball better ball for a change which was won by Vesa and Susi Suhonen on 44 points followed by Eric Morsner and Derek Airey in second place, counting out Fred Welch and Jimmy Spear into third slot, both teams on 43 points.

Saturday, as mentioned above, was the Christmas alliance competition which was a major success with almost 90 players in the actual competition. Thanks to women’s captain, Linda Toward who, together with her team worked tirelessly to make the day a great one.

Thanks also to the players, both members and visitors for their support of this annual competition. The winners on the day were the team of John Thompson, Mike Harvard, Christopher Pillay and Mike Cromhout on 91 points with Tom, Viv and Dean Naicker together with Leven Chetty in second spot with 90 points.

In third place was Warren Taylor, Dave Rickards, Barrie Taylor and Peter Williamson on 88 points. Nearest the pins were won by – fourth Shaun Jenkins – ninth Dwayne Morsner – 13th Robert Roux and 17th Charles Norman. The straightest drive for the men (18th fairway) was won by Peter Toward (Peter was closest to the string) and Sabiha Bacaus won it for the women by getting closest to the pin in three shots on the 18th green.
