Toti’s Lisha off to US on athletics scholarship

Lisha, who finished her IEB matric exams with outstanding results departed on her new adventure on 31 December.

ONE of Amanzimtoti Athletics Club’s best junior athletes over the last number of years, Lisha van Onselen has been rewarded for her diligence and outstanding achievements.

In early December, she was awarded a full athletics scholarship to Coastal Carolina University in the USA.

Lisha, who finished her IEB matric exams with outstanding results departed on her new adventure on 31 December. She will study biochemistry and compete for the university in indoor and outdoor track and cross-country in the NCAA Division I, the highest collegiate sports division.

Lisha started at the club as a 12-year-old and gradually progressed to the level of KZN champion in the 1500m and 800m for the last three years in a row in her age division. She was the 2015 KZN senior women’s champion in the 1,500m with an excellent time of 4.38, won a silver medal in the junior girls 1,500m at the 2015 SA Schools Championships in Rustenburg, despite the disadvantage of competing at altitude as a coastal-trained athlete.

The club will certainly miss her and the example she set for other juniors as a disciplined and committed athlete and scholar showing how to kick down the doors of opportunity through consistent hard work. The club wishes her well on her new adventures.
