UMKOMAAS Golf Club can boast not one but two members who snatched both the B and C division championship titles at the Natal Nomads Day, which the Club hosted on Thursday, 3 December.

The club expected to at least have one of the home course players (there were quite a few UGC members playing on the day) to come somewhere in the prizes but to have two of them win their divisions, is fantastic.

One of its more exuberant members, Derek Airey won the B division trophy and Craig Redfern, once again, won the C division trophy. Congratulations to both Derek and Craig on their achievement, they both have bragging rights for the next year.

Wednesday was the normal individual stableford, played in excruciatingly hot weather but as always, the Wednesday ‘school’ wasn’t too bothered about the heat of the day, going out and enjoying an afternoon with friends. The club welcomed Steve Cullen, Andrew Pickavance, Mike Harvard and Raymond Ntombela to the competition and it was one of the ‘younger generation’ who won. Well done to Gregg Andersson on his 45 points, followed by Bing Opie in second spot and counting out Johan Hugo in third place, both on 43 points.

On Saturday, in rather ‘dodgy’ weather, it was the fourball better ball stableford competition and the club welcomed Nigel Jones and Dave Rickards (welcome back to South Africa, Dave) to the competition. It was nice to see a couple of new names on the prize list .Well done to George Mzimela and Joe Mkhungo in first place, counting out Mike Cromhout and Derek Airey into second spot, both with 46, and in third slot was Bruce Sutcliffe and Kuben Naidoo, very close behind them with 45 points. Thanks again to Eagle Canyon Spur at Galleria for the vouchers, it is much appreciated.

The jackpot was a three-way tie between Dave Kemp, Derek Airey and Joe Mkhungo, all three on 10 points with the hidden birdie going begging again this week (second hole) which will be carried over to next week. Bruce Sutcliffe took home the attendance draw and John Thompson scooped the ‘birds’ in the football sweep with Oxford United.

Next Saturday, 19 December is the big one. The women’s section have been working tirelessly to make ‘their day’ a huge success and so far, everything is on track. It’s the Christmas fourball alliance day plus it’s the R10,000 draw. There will be a live band to entertain everyone at prize giving so if you don’t have your team down to play, time slots are getting scarce but there are still a few earlier times available. This promises to be a great competition among friends, both old and new so go on down and enjoy the afternoon and evening with UGC. To book a time, call the club on 039-973-1042 for a fun-filled day.

Welcome to all the holiday visitors from upcountry. Welcome to the South Coast and UGC hopes you have a wonderful Christmas and a relaxing holiday.
