IT was open season on turkeys last weekend at Toti Bowling Club, when the annual Turkey Day competitions were played.

Even the hot, humid conditions last Saturday could not wilt the women’s festive spirit, and winners and losers alike had a pleasant morning.

In first place, winning the turkeys were Doreen Salmond, Denise Bingham and Maureen Griffin. The runners-up who won the gammon were Pam Chalder-Royle, Yvonne Wright and Karen Shepherd. The 2nd session prize of chicken went to Jeanne Alexander, Jackie Holdrick and Gaynor Snyman.

Two teams won a box of wine each from Orange River Cellars, for which Jerry Gertzen is thanked. The teams were Amanda Ninow, Val de Kok and Bernie Bretherton; and Marion Crouch, Joan van Rensburg and Maggie Robertson. Jacqui Fouché was the lucky winner of another turkey on the 100 board.

The men’s turkey competition the following day was also played in good spirits, and taking home the turkey were Vince Marriott, Gustav Somers, and Stuart Pickles. Runners-up, winning gammon, were Adie Fuller, Robbie Roberts and Bobby Henderson. The second session prize of chicken was won by Alec Stirzaker, Pete Shepard and Martin Birch. Pete Shepard, Herbie Hofmann and Trevor Zulch won Orange River Cellars wine on the lucky draw, and it must really have been Pete Shepard’s lucky day, because he also won the turkey in the 100 board draw.

At TGIF the attendance draw was won by Brad Cox, but as he was not present the pot rises to R250 for next time. Al McGregor won the 100 board, and Heather Brown’s number came out in the key draw. However, she did not choose the right key, so the pot goes to R4,350 next week.

Remember that there will be no Big Chicks competition this month. However, keep checking the notice board, as lists are still up for Port Natal competitions and the New Year’s Eve party.

Birthday greetings this week go to Ian Crouch, Yvonne Wright, Hennie van der Poel and Debbie Groom, and best wishes are also sent to any members, past and present who are not in the best of health. Finally, the club’s deepest condolences go out to Brenda Mulligan and family on the unexpected loss of her son, and to Trevor Dempsey on the loss of his brother.
