RWFL salutes its ace athletes

After just more than a year on the programme, Bruce has reduced his blood pressure to a manageable level.

THE annual prize giving and year-end braai for Run Walk for Life (RWFL) was held this past weekend at the beautiful Umbogovango Nature Reserve.

Despite the small thundershower that chased members under cover, a great time was had by all.

Prize winners were Thobile Ngubane, runner of the year; Andelene Downs was walker of the year and the family award was again won by the Nawrattel family.

A special award was given to WO2 Bruce Clark of 15 Squadron based at the old Durban airport, for his determination and will to overcome the odds. Bruce has been involved in flying for over 30 years and suffered a stroke in 2014. High blood pressure and high cholesterol levels were contributing factors. After recovering slightly, Bruce came to RWFL late in 2014. He could not walk properly as he was still suffering the debilitating after-effects of the stroke. That was not his biggest worry, however, as the doctors had grounded him. No more flying until his BP and cholesterol were under control. He started off slowly and the club monitored his pulse and breathing at every session. After a few weeks there was a marked difference in him.

After just more than a year on the programme, Bruce has reduced his blood pressure to a manageable level. His cholesterol has reduced from 6.0 to 3.9. He now comfortably walks 5kms to 6kms and has even started jogging. His doctor is amazed at the progress he has made and most importantly, the airforce is close to giving Bruce his wings back and allowing him to once more fly in his beloved Oryx helicopters.
