Toti man is SA surf lifesaver of the year

The award is in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service.

AMANZIMTOTI Surf Lifesaving Club’s Des Hangar was named SA surf lifesaver of the year at an awards function in Durban recently.

The club applauds Des for his five years of active service as a volunteer lifeguard, instructor, skipper and ducky captain.

Des’s passion and commitment to lifesaving is encouraging to locals and visitors who have seen him in action.

At 52 years of age, he is an inspiration to all. It is a common sight on Toti beach to see Des instructing junior and senior lifeguards every Sunday and a pleasure to watch his expertise manoeuvring the ducky through the swells.

Des was both honoured and humbled to receive the award in recognition of outstanding and dedicated service. He salutes all fellow lifeguards and said there is no greater award than to see a smile of appreciation when he has saved a life.
