Fry’s 64 runs secures win for ACC against Umlazi

ACC bowled and fielded well to restrict a talented Umlazi batting line-up to 96 for eight wickets in 20 overs.

AMANZIMTOTI Cricket Club’s (ACC) first team played against Umlazi.

ACC bowled and fielded well to restrict a talented Umlazi batting line-up to 96 for eight wickets in 20 overs.

Jarryd Michaux, Ngobani Mbili and JJ de Wet were the stand out bowlers with figures of four overs, three wickets for 16 runs, four overs, three wicket for 22 runs and four overs, one wicket for 12 runs respectively and were well backed up by the other bowlers.

Warren Fry opened the batting and was not out for a well constructed and perfectly timed 64 runs, which broke the back of Umlazi’s bowling attack. The other batters chipped in to help pass their total with five balls to spare for the loss of four wickets. This win puts us into the semi-final round of the T20 competion next weekend.

The U15 team claimed their first win by beating Lamontville and once again they played without a full team. Steffan Hennop opened the batting and scored an unbeaten 26. The bowlers all bowled well to restrict Lamontville to 67 runs which allowed ACC to patiently bat past their score in 11 overs for the loss of 6 wickets.`The club appeals to other U15 cricketers to join this team of young men who would dearly love to play their games with 11 players instead of eight or nine which has been the case the last two weeks.

ACC 2 played against Hillary Malvern at the Fairfield grounds. Hillary batted first, and made 197 all out. A Heilbuth took three wickets for 31 in his five overs, and he was well supported by Nienaber, Du Preez and Strydom with two scalps each. The batting response went well, and Faf Strydom top-scored with 55 runs. There was again good support in the form of B Benadie, TP Venter and J Pretorius who each contributed to a successful run-chase. Toti reached the required 198 in the 31st over through a superb all-round team effort.

On Sunday, 11 October the ACC third team played Phoenix at the Toti Oval. Skipper Mark Bingham won the toss on a hot afternoon and much to the dismay of his team mates, sent Phoenix in to bat. He had a plan, and the new ball pair of Llewellyn Pretorius and Jacques van Zyl kept things tight as per the captain’s request, with Lew picking up two wickets in his spell.

One of them thanks to a Peter Matthews spectacular catch in the grabs, something his team mates are getting quite used to seeing.

Darryl Herman, Mike Lombard and Andrew Dickason all picked up one wicket each, but with a performance that would have earned a man-of-the-match award to most players, Dean Carson finished his five overs with two maidens, picking up five wickets for only 10 runs. It really must be a batters game, Dean. Phoenix 80 all out in 23 overs. The new opening partnership made a solid start, scoring half the required runs before an irresponsible shot saw Mark McCalgan being first man out with 24 runs. Peter came and went with a shot of similar quality. Mark Bingham with his man-of-the-match performance of 29 runs was dismissed in between these two wickets to get the Phoenix boys a bit excited. But Shaun Kolver came in and hit and hobbled his way to a quick-fire 16 not out. Goose Erlank didn’t trouble the scorer picking out a fielder perfectly, which left Jacques to come in and finish off the chase in the 18th over. A good performance with ACC3 winning by six wickets with 12 overs to spare. Thanks to Rex for a good pitch, and for scoring.

U13 North team:

The boys played against INK 3 from Umlazi. INK won the toss, and chose to bat first on the soccer field pitch which was yielding a lot of runs over the weekend. Unfortunately for them, accurate and tight bowling was provided by Toti, and they never really managed to get a partnership going. They were all bowled out for 33. Michael Russell, Morne Nel and Fourie Peters each contributed with two wickets in their short spells, and some good spin and two run-outs saw off the rest. The opening partnership of Janko Roets and Ethan Elder made quick work of the required runs with 14 and 19 respectively, and Toti passed the required total in the seventh over for the loss of only one wicket. This is a team itching to get a bat first up, and have these talented players really show what they can do.

U13 South team:

The draw for this week was an away game against Harlequins at the Quins 1 oval. Harlequins batted first and scored a challenging total of 143 runs. The Toti batting got off to a steady and measured response, but the scoring rate was a bit slow at three runs per over. The team were 59 for one wicket by the 18th over, and needed to score at around seven per over to chase the total down. The pressure began to tell on the boys, and the batting collapsed to end the innings 68 runs short on 75 all out. Bad luck boys.

U11 North team:

The team played against INK 2 at the Siripat grounds. INK 2 went in to bat first, and only managed a score of 66 runs. There was some really good bowling from the team, with Jon Jon Flay getting four wickets for one run, and Romashan Pillay getting another three for just four runs. The reply was a short-lived affair of only seven overs without the loss of a wicket. Romashan again contributed a healthy 36 not out, and Connor Carson had a tidy 20 not out. Another good victory. Well done to the team.

U11 South team:

The boys were up against Malvern. Toti batted first, and scored an excellent 183 runs for just three wickets in their allotted overs. Notable contributions from Jordan W with 51, Keenan with 38, Jordan VZ with 26 not out and Waldo with 19 not out. Malvern were up against it from the outset, and could only amass 93 runs in their innings. Jordan VZ took three for 12 runs, Jordan W two for no runs and Waldo another two for only 11. A fantastic first win for this team. Well done to all who played. Keep it up lads.
