UMKOMAAS Golf Club (UGC) has a new club captain and committee to guide the club into 2016.

The new committee are all wished every success in the years to come.

Congratulations to Jimmy Spear, the new club captain, Graham Coxell, vice captain and new committee members, John Thompson and Bing Opie. Devlyn Fraser remains as the club chairman. Congratulations once again to you all.

It was the usual individual stableford on Wednesday where the club welcomed long-standing visitor, Mike Harvard. There was a new name on the prize list this week, well done to Craig Redfern on taking first place with 38 points, followed by Mike Harvard in second slot with 37 points. Three shots behind in third place was Simon van den Bosch, counting out both John Thompson in fourth spot and Dudley Pringle in fifth place, all on 34 points.

Last Saturday, the competition was a little different. It was the threeball waltzing alliance which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who played. The club welcomed regular visitors Annabelle and Selwyn Hesom as well as Dennis Kamstra and Chris Coxell to the club and competition. The winning threesome were Derek Airey, John Thompson and Deneys Williamson on an incredible 89 points (they must have got the timing right) and in second place, way behind the leaders, were Sabiha Bacaus, Jacques Hulley and Nelson Moonsamy on 78 points.

The jackpot was won by Deneys Williamson with 11 points but the hidden birdie will be carried over to next week, as it is still hiding on the long third hole. There were only two two-clubs that were paid out – Devlyn Fraser on the fourth and Nelson Moonsamy on the 17th hole. Fred Brandow (nice to see him playing in Saturday’s club competition) took home the attendance draw.

The competition on Saturday, 3 October, will be the Toyota monthly medal with social golf on Sunday, 4 October. The course will be stunning after Spring treatment, it’s almost like spending a week at the local spa. Call the club to book a time for both Saturday and Sunday on 039-973-1042.

The club is hosting a MegaMaster sponsor day on Saturday, 10 October where there will be great prizes to be won, all thanks to Gregg Andersson. Contact the club to book your time, the tee time slots are filling up fast so don’t leave it too late and be disappointed. For any information on this competition, call the office for details on the number above.

Also next weekend is the start of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championships, played on the three most famous golf courses in the world – St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns in Scotland. There will South Africans galore playing this one, so watch out for them. Always good to see familiar South African faces tee-ing up and hopefully still there at the end of the four days. Good luck to them all. Then, of course, the following weekend there’s the President’s Cup being played in Korea this time around. There’s some great golf coming up in the next few weeks, don’t miss it.

KidzGolf is only on a Saturday morning between 8am and 9am during school terms. Devlyn has equipment for the youngsters to use at the start of their tuition, then see if they enjoy playing golf and want to take it further. Devlyn and his assistant coach, Lindani would love to see you down at the club for golf lessons.
