Athletes endure tough Mandela Marathon

A large group of Toti AC members ran the Mandela Marathon on Sunday.

WITH Spring in the air and the improved weather and light conditions, many more runners are back on the road.

If you are looking for a Comrades training programme, coach Lindsay Perry’s advice can be downloaded from the Comrades website.

Amanzimtoti Athletics Club runners who train in the early mornings are encouraged to run in a group for safety.

The Comrades entry process opened on 1 September and early bird entries close at the end of September.

A large group of Toti AC members ran the Mandela Marathon on Sunday. Most of the athletes stayed at Midmar and in the Howick area. There was a choice of a triathlon mountain bike race, trail run or to run the following distances 42km, 21km or a 10km. Conditions for the run were tough with a cool start. As the day progressed, the weather got hot and sticky. The race ended at the famous Nelson Mandela capture site. The winning man’s time for the marathon was 2.28 and the woman’s 2.53.

Well done to all athletes who took part in the Bluff Meats run which also took place on Sunday.

Members are reminded that the Sapphire Coast Marathon hosted by Toti AC takes place on 18 October. The helper’s run takes place on 10 October, and members are asked to help with marshalling, race registration, making of tea and coffee and help at the finish. Give names to Martyn or Des.
