Athletes tackle Supa Mama’s savage climbs

Members who want to run in the mornings in a group can join Warren who leaves the Woolworths parking area opposite Virgin Active at 4.30am for an 8km run.

ON Sunday, Amanzimtoti Athletics Club took part in the Supa Mama 21/10km run hosted by Savages Athletics Club.

The new venue and route took runners through a two-lap route in Morningside, Durban with some big, long climbs.

The club did well with Thierry the third male in his age group and Thobikile third in her age group.

Runners need to start doing some serious hill training at least once a week. Athletes are reminded that the Comrades entries open on 1 September.

Club members will be making the trip to the Mandela Marathon on Sunday. The finish for both events will be at Mandela capture site in Howick. This is always a well-supported event and the 42km is a tough race. The club wishes Laurie and Amy all the best for their big day over the weekend as the two love birds exchange their marriage vows at Greyville Racecourse.

Members can join the following training days, all starting from the Toti AC clubhouse: Tuesday – training with coach Cecil 5.30am; Wednesday – time trial starting at 6pm. Reflector belts must be worn. Saturday – 11km club run with tea and biscuits afterwards at 6am. Sunday is the club long run with Cecil at 5.30am. Times will change in summer.

The time trial on the first Wednesday of the month will be run in reverse, with a bring and braai held afterwards. All family and friends are welcome to join the club.

The Bluff Meats challenge for 30 August is still on. The venue has changed to Hoy Park and confirmation has been received that the Capital Climb 50km walk has been cancelled.
