Prepare for KZN cross country champs this weekend

South African runners will be eligible for the 'early bird' entry fee of R380 if their entry is received before 30 September.

ON Saturday morning, the final cross country league takes place with Collegians running club hosting the KZN cross country champs in Pietermaritzburg.

This is a fast, flat route making for some fast times. A reminder that Saturday’s programme starts earlier than normal.

The top athletes in their respective age groups will be chosen for the KZN cross country team to travel to the SA cross country champs.

Unfortunately the Merewent 10 km club champs was cancelled last Sunday. The club members did the 8km time trial with a choice of one, two or three laps of 8kms. A braai and social was had after the run. Thanks to Trevor and Tanya for manning the water and cold drinks table and for looking after the children. The club plans to do an eight-by-eight kilometre training run in preparation for the Comrades Marathon next year.

The 91st Comrades Marathon will be a down-run on Sunday, 29 May 2016. The race starts at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 5.30am and ends 12 hours later at the Sahara-Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban, covering a distance of around 90km.

The opening date for Comrades entries is 1 September. Entries will close on 30 November or as soon as the entry cap of 20,000 has been reached. Prospective entrants are urged to enter early to avoid disappointment.

Entry fees for the 2016 Comrades Marathon are as follows:

South African runners will be eligible for the ‘early bird’ entry fee of R380 if their entry is received before 30 September. The regular South African entry fee of R420 will kick in on 1 October until the entry process is closed.

The club will be at the Savages Supa Mama race on Sunday. This is a 21km or 10km. Pre-entries are closed but runners can still enter at the Durban Runner. Cash entries only on Saturday at Morningside Primary School from the morning to 4pm. Remember the venue and route have changed.

Hopefully with the change in weather and spring approaching, members will get the motivation to start their training again. Take care when training in the early morning, and ensure you have a reflector belt or wearing light clothing, always run in a group and avoid running alone.
