Ina does Wentworth proud in top 8 of Champion of Champions

Dawn Spack and Andy Cloete walked away with the proceeds from the first board.

WIKIPEDIA defines lawn bowls as a game in which biased balls are rolled to stop close to a smaller ball called a ‘jack’ or a ‘kitty’.

Sounds simple doesn’t it? Not always, which is why Wentworth Bowling Club hosts coaching sessions at 1.30pm on Wednesdays.

Even experienced bowlers develop bad habits and need coaching to get rid of these. Wentworth’s two qualified club coaches offer key coaching points on how to perform the various skills required when playing the game.

On a busy Wednesday, activities started in the morning with the Chicken Shack pairs competition. A close tussle for domination saw Colin Coetzee and Steve Baker (with a four plus 19) edge out Terry Micholson and Johan Nel by one shot. Steven Evenwell and his partner Maureen won the second session prize. Two 60/40 boards were drawn. Dawn Spack and Andy Cloete walked away with the proceeds from the first board, and Anne Bonthrone and Brian Osman shared the loot from the second board. The Spacks added to their prizes when Kurt’s number was drawn from the bag for the meat raffle.

The family and friends development bowls was well attended. It is good to see new bowlers getting out on the greens to enjoy the game. Dirk Venter and Lorraine White proved too strong for the opposition and walked away with the first prize. Frank Greyvenstein, Brian Brittain and Bernie Pool took home the biscuits. Ina Davis and Hennie were the winners on the first 60/40 board and Bokka van der Westhuizen and John Swanepoel were the names pulled from the bag for the second board draw. The monthly braai will be held after this Wednesday’s bowls.

The Rawsons breakfast trips was another closely contested competition. This time Luvoyo Ndava, Ken Thomas and Chris Pozyn scooped the pot with a three shot win over Norman Moor, Philip Pieterse and their lead, Claude. The second session prize went to Brian and Paula Osman who teamed up with Norman Robinson for the challenge. Kurt Spack must have had his lucky rabbit’s foot in his pocket, going home with the roast pork and both board first prizes after the morning’s activities. Arnie Harper happily received the whiskey prize and Anne Bonthrone and Robby Carr each won a bottle of Rawson’s red wine. Ivor Aylward and Derrick Stevens were the second prize winners on the board.

Friday’s Bluff Meat men’s bowls proved to be a festive occasion for Dennis Gericke, Alan Bower and Ivor Aylward as they held out to force Brian Smith, Tomcat Cavanagh and Henry Welgemoed into second place by one shot, and thereby secure the R700 perch jackpot as well as the usual first prize. Well done. The sportsmen’s prize went to Eric Smit, Robin de Gouveia and Neil Smith. The pork raffle was won by Herbie Hoffman and the beef went to Kurt ‘Rabbit Foot’ Spack. Herbie’s luck held out when the first board was drawn and his number came out for the main prize. Jumbo Nel received the second prize. The astonished participants heard Kurt Spack declared the winner of the second board. Is there no stopping this man?

Ina Davies was the winner of the smaller board booty.

The Port Natal Champion of Champion singles was played this weekend so the only club competition challenge was a mid-week semi-final of the men’s nominated pairs. It was contested between Moses and Phil Hill who took on Wayne Smith and Spider Williams. Wayne and Spider, once again, allowed the opposition to take an early lead and waited until the sixth end to draw a shot. They then ploughed their way back into the game to peal six-all on the ninth end. Moses and Phil fought back to take the lead again and were seven shots ahead on the 12th end. Wayne and Spider seemed to find the determination required and only dropped one more shot in the game, eventually winning by 23 shots to 14. This takes them through to the final against Terry Micholson and Brian Smith. Members are reminded to check the notice board for competition postings.

The club singles champions Luvuyo Ndava and Ina Davies represented Wentworth Bowling Club in the Port Natal Champion of Champion singles on Saturday. Luvuyo regrettably was knocked out in the first round. Ina, however, went on to win her first two rounds comfortably and was one of the last eight bowlers in the competition. Unfortunately, she lost this game and missed out on playing in the semi-final. Well done, Ina – the club is proud of your achievement.
