Robyn, Jane in brilliant form for open singles finals

In the final game of the men’s league, first division Toti A lost 0-7 to Westville CC ‘A’

ROBYN Hutton certainly came out with ‘guns blazing’ when she played in the semi-finals of the women’s open singles at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club against Julie Sutherland last week.

Julie fought back hard but was unable to take the win away from Robyn.

In the other semi-final game Marion Crouch started strongly, but her opponent Jane Coetzee put in a great game to take the win, so the final round of the women’s open singles promises to be a great game to watch.

In women’s senior singles Nita Meumann and Val de Kok battled it out for 25 ends in their round two match before Nita sealed her win. In a game of two halves, Guelfo Cobianchi was in the lead until the 10th end, when Vince Phaal took over the lead in their men’s open singles game and kept it, and in mixed pairs Coy Schrauwen and Jane Coetzee proved too strong for Alec and Nicky Stirzaker. In men’s novices, Peter Snyman went down to Shawn Sutherland.

Marion Crouch, Cathy du Plooy and Nicky Stirzaker were this month’s winners of the women’s trips, with Doreen Salmond, Bobby Stewart and Adrienne Robbins runners-up. Mardi Dovale, Amanda Ninow and Jennifer Greenslade won the 2nd session prize; Margaret van Belkum won the ‘spider’ which raised R148 for Hospice, and Pam Chalder-Royle won the 100 board. The men’s 2-4-2 winners were Ian Mills and Alec Stirzaker, with Les John and Ken Baker runners-up. Second session went to Colin Coetzee and Dave Kemp.

Big Chicks winners were Lofty van Tonder, Marion Crouch, Julie Sutherland and Micky Roche on a 4+30; Heather Brown, Bobby Stewart, Kathy Cox and Les (Snoopy) Brown came second, and Peter and Maxien Barnes, Ben Venter and Guelfo Cobianchi were third. First session went to Greg McLeod, Doug Joubert, Marilyn Thiart and Mike Pitchers while second session to Willem Pelzer, Glen Scorgie, Jenny Delport and Jackie Holdrick. Thirteenth prize went to Pam Chalder-Royle, Ian Mills, Betty Sawyer and Shawn Sutherland, and most bowls was ‘won’ by Don Saunders, Dave Kemp, Leon van Rensburg and Jacqui Fouché. The 100 board winners were Jackie Holdrick, Jennifer Greenslade, Robbie Roberts and Peter Callaghan. Thanks go to sponsors, Jerry Gertzen of Orange River Cellars, Gladys Hughes and Brian Pascoe; and to organiser, Dave Gardner, Toni Roberts for her help in the kitchen, and to bar, kitchen and grounds staff for making the morning such a fun event.

John Mitchley’s tab came out in the TGIF member’s draw, but as he was not there to collect, the pot rolls over to R500 next week. The 100 board was won by Maggie Robertson, and the ‘Damagers’ number was selected in the key draw, but this time they had no luck, so the pot will rise to R1,800 next week.

The lists are on the board for mixed 2-4-2 on Friday, 26 June and the mutton on Sunday, 28 June. If you don’t have a team but would like to play, put your name and contact number on the available lists. Lists are also now up for the women’s drawn pairs and the men’s senior singles, as well as various cardings.

In the final game of the men’s league, first division Toti A lost 0-7 to Westville CC ‘A’; second division Toti B lost 2-5 to Durban B; third division Toti C won 5-2 against Ridley park A; fifth division Toti D lost 0-5 to Durban Wanderers C; sixth division Toti E lost 0-5 to Berea B; sixth division Toti F lost 0-5 to Durban Wanderers D; eighth division Toti G lost 2-3 to Umhlanga C.

The only birthday member this week is Alf Bingham, so good wishes to him and to all members who are not in the best of health. It is with sadness that the club learned that Paul Steele lost his battle to cancer after a very brave fight. Condolences are sent to his family and friends at this sad time.
