Comrades prize-giving lauds ultra marathon athletes

Themba was a well-loved member who always had a big smile and friendly word to offer.

AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club’s Comrades ache and pains prize-giving was held on Saturday at the club house.

A great day was had by all Comrades runners, family and friends.

Big thanks are extended to Belinda and Chris for organising a most successful day. The Comrades prize winners are: First male J Shishani; second male H Sidane; third male C Stange; first vet home C Stange; first female K Sobrino; second female C Carr; third female J Yelseth; first female vet K Sobrino.

Unfortunately the club entered 62 athletes for the Comrades with 17 athletes not making it to the finish line. This year there were also no silver medals for Amanzimtoti AC.

Coach Cecil Clarke will be introducing the Comrades and Two oceans programme from October, to build athletes to qualify in January or February 2016 for a marathon.

With Comrades a thing of the past, athletes must now not go into hibernation with the dark and cold mornings. Athletes have a great opportunity to prepare for the 10 and 21km club champs, to work on improving speed work after all the mileage needed for Comrades. Athletes can make use of the cross country leagues and trail runs offered at the moment.

Upcoming road running events: 5 July, Sardine 10km, 21km and 42km run; 12 July, Waterfall 10km run and walk.

Cross country: League five takes place on 20 June at Stainbank Nature Reserve.

The time trial takes place on Wednesday. On the first Wednesday of the month there is a reverse time trial where athletes can predict their time and bring and braai afterwards.

A number of Toti AC women entered the women’s Spar 10km on Sunday, 7 June with Karen Sobrino coming second in her age group to add another podium finish. Well done to the women.

The club received the bad news on Wednesday of the death of Themba Ndlovu. The club extends its condolences to Themba’s family and next of kin. The funeral was held on Sunday and was attended by club runners. Themba was a well-loved member who always had a big smile and friendly word to offer. RIP Themba.
